Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our Transmission System Protection Engineering. The paid internship provides opportunities for students to assist protection engineers in doing system studies, collecting and gathering information from system events, and having a better understanding of how our transmission grid works and how to protect it.

Students will learn the basics of power system modeling and protection. Job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Modeling of power system components for short circuit studies
  • Using substation metering and relaying diagrams to model the relay and zone of protection
  • Gathering event information (weather history, lightning data, fault records, targets) for event analysis
  • Fulfilling data modeling from transmission portfolio delivery/capital projects
  • Fulfilling short-circuit study requests from various departments
  • Doing data reporting and analysis on power system network

This position is for a June 1, 2026 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel Energy's business needs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current student, Sophomore status (as of May 2026) or higher (grads are ok)
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in BSEE or MSEE or MEE. Electrical Only
  • Able to commute to the (service center, plant, or corporate office) or Minneapolis, MN
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the spring (up to 20 hours a week).
  • Valid Drivers License and personal Vehicle

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
  • Completed 1-2 years of undergraduate coursework, including classes in Calculus and Physics and optional Electrical Engineering course
  • Experience or Proficiency with Microsoft Office
