Heavy Equipment Operator / Working Foreman

Box L Enterprises LLC, a rapidly growing excavation and structural support company based in Cody, Wyoming, is seeking a highly experienced Heavy Equipment Operator / Working Foreman to join our team. This role is ideal for a motivated, detail-oriented professional who takes pride in quality work, cares for equipment meticulously, and can operate solo and lead small crews while still working hands-on in the field.

Position Overview

The Working Foreman is responsible for operating excavation equipment at a high skill level, directing day-to-day jobsite activities, completing fine-grade and utility work, and maintaining strong, professional communication with clients. This role requires someone who can both lead and work, demonstrate excellent judgment, and represent the company with integrity.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operation & Earthwork

  • Operate excavators, loaders, skid steers, compactors, and related equipment with expert skill.
  • Perform grading, trenching, benching, shoring, compaction, backfilling, and fine-grade prep for foundations, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Dig safely around utilities using proper locating, spotting, and excavation practices.
  • Install septic systems, culverts, drainage features, and underground utilities.
  • Select the correct materials (base, bedding, pipe, aggregates, soils) for each application.

Field Leadership & Work Ethic

  • Act as a working foreman—lead by example while participating in daily work.
  • Not afraid to grab a shovel, rake, or jump in the ditch when needed.
  • Make jobsite decisions confidently and problem-solve in the field.
  • Maintain a clean, organized jobsite and uphold safety standards.

Blueprints, Layout & Quality Control

  • Read and interpret engineering plans, civil drawings, and construction documents.
  • Set grade with a laser quickly and accurately.
  • Ensure all work meets specifications, tolerances, and code requirements.
  • Track quantities and document site activity.

Professionalism, Communication & Company Growth

  • Communicate clearly with clients, inspectors, subcontractors, and team members.
  • Represent Box L Enterprises professionally at all times.
  • Assist in identifying, pursuing, and developing new work opportunities.
  • Maintain organized daily reports, timesheets, material and fuel logs, and expense tracking.

Equipment Care & Maintenance

  • Treat equipment like your own—keep it clean, greased, and maintained daily.
  • Report issues immediately and perform basic diagnostics and field repairs.
  • Follow maintenance schedules and ensure maximum uptime.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years experience operating heavy equipment in excavation or civil construction.
  • Strong knowledge of excavation safety, utility work, soil types, and compaction.
  • Ability to read engineering plans and use lasers for grade checking.
  • Valid driver's license (CDL required).
  • Excellent organizational skills and high attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and a positive, professional attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and lead small crews.
  • Must be reliable, hardworking, and take pride in craftsmanship.

Compensation

  • Competitive hourly rate DOE $35-$50/hr
