Job Title: Assistant/Associate Librarian - Department Chair, Public Services/Public Services Librarian

Job Purpose: The University of Wyoming Libraries seeks applicants for a Chair of Public Services. This position provides leadership for the Public Services Department, which includes circulation, interlibrary loan, stacks maintenance, mailroom, and public services/user experience operations, located at W.R. Coe Library, as well as a branch library and storage annex located on the main UW campus. The breakdown of duties for this position is 40% administration, 40% practice of librarianship, 10% scholarship, and 10% service. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Libraries. The Chair salary includes a base amount determined by the salary range and faculty rank (assistant or associate) at the time of hire, plus an $8,208 yearly administrative stipend.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily operations of circulation, resource sharing, branch libraries, and user experience.
  • Foster teamwork, cooperation, and communication within the Public Services department.
  • Hire, mentor, and direct unit supervisors and faculty members in the division.
  • Set performance goals and approve timesheets and leave for four direct reports, and approve hiring, terminations, and compensation changes for all faculty, benefited staff and student employees in the Public Services department.
  • Contribute to public services functions, including reference services, student outreach and programming.
  • Plan and implement assessment, policies, and workflows within the department.
  • Facilitate communication and cooperation with other Libraries departments and campus partners.
  • Advocate for department needs.
  • Participate in twice-monthly Libraries leadership meetings, contributing to strategic planning efforts.
  • Respond to building emergencies in consult with UW Libraries' Dean's Office and other Libraries emergency personnel.

Supplemental Functions:

As a member of the library faculty, the successful candidate is expected to pursue an active and ongoing program of research, service and professional development.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS, MIS, or ALA-recognized equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years professional library experience
  • Supervisory and personnel management experience
  • Knowledge of or experience in conflict management
  • Demonstrated communication skills
  • Strong customer service ethic and commitment to patron privacy
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices, issues, and trends related to public and/or access services

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with one or more aspect of public/access services: circulation, reserves, resource sharing, or stacks maintenance
  • Project management experience
  • Knowledge of or experience in assessing user experience, public services, or access services
  • Experience with integrated library systems/library management systems, particularly in the areas of fulfillment/circulation and/or resource sharing.
