Substation Engineer
The position will support Primary design in delivering project and proposal activities across a diverse portfolio of international T&D substation for Solar, BESS & Wind projects, with a strong focus on UK-based engagements. The role will also contribute individually to key project deliverables, applying deep technical expertise and established engineering methodologies.
The role includes ensuring all engineering outputs consistently meet required On-Time Delivery (OTD) targets and comply with internal and external quality standards. The role includes reviewing designs, resolving technical issues, and ensuring disciplined execution of engineering activities.
This position is responsible for delivering high-quality engineering design across multiple concurrent projects ranging from moderate-scale assignments to major project work packages while ensuring cost-effective execution aligned with contract specifications, safety requirements, and agreed project timelines.
The role demands a commitment to technical excellence, proactive project involvement, and a strong focus on quality and timely delivery of day-to-day outputs.
WSP are looking for experienced substation engineers with minimum 10 years' experience, to provide technical advisory support services, within the Renewable power generation sector. Responsibilities
- Lead and support Primary Substation Design for HV transmission and distribution for Solar, BESS & Wind projects (up to 400 kV or as applicable).
- Primary Engineering deliverables includes Layout engineering, MEWP, CDM, Earthing system, Substation HV/LV cable system, Bus works, BOQ, etc for various voltage level of substations up to 400kV
- To lead the development and delivery of project proposals
- Lead on efficiency improvements in delivery
- Prepare, review, and approve engineering drawings, SLDs, layouts, equipment specifications, calculations, and studies.
- Ensure all engineering deliverables meet On-Time Delivery (OTD), quality standards, and contractual requirements.
- Apply established engineering methodologies and ensure compliance with relevant international standards (e.g., IEC, ENA, BS).
- Resolve technical issues during design development and proactively mitigate risks.
- Deliver engineering design packages for multiple projects simultaneously ranging from medium-scale tasks to large work packages.
- Ensure cost-effective, safe, and efficient design solutions aligned with project objectives and schedules.
- Contribute technical inputs during proposal stages, including scope definition, effort estimation, and design assumptions.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and cross-disciplinary coordination meetings
- Work with the WSP values to ensure that work complies with all necessary corporate, departmental and legislative requirements and procedures, to guarantee that the necessary consistency and quality of delivery is maintained.
- Work closely with internal teams (civil, secondary, protection & control, GIS/AIS equipment specialists) to ensure integrated design delivery.
- Engage with clients, OEMs, suppliers, and contractors to clarify design requirements and resolve queries.
- Support client engagements, workshops, and technical advisory discussions as needed
- Ensure all designs comply with internal quality processes, project-specific requirements, and external regulatory standards.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by applying lessons learned and enhancing standard templates and design practices.
- Maintain strong focus on safety, ensuring all engineering outputs meet statutory and regulatory safety requirements.

Qualifications
- Educated to degree level in Electrical Engineering
- 10+ Extensive experience in Substation primary engineering specifically for renewable projects and interface with other discipline
- A wide network of industry contacts and clients
- Proactive and highly motivated to meet customer requirements
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, often working on multiple projects/ proposals at any one time
- Ability to deliver client work efficiently to externally driven deadlines
- Focus on quality, ensuring excellence of deliverables for both project reports and proposals
- Strong & in-depth market knowledge of UK Power Industry
- Proven client relationship with UK clients is an advantage.
