Geotechnical Engineer

WSP has a new opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mine Waste team on a renewable fixed-term basis in Accra, Ghana. This is an intermediate level position in the consulting team and is regarded as a professional person in the delivery of geotechnical services, in line with the WSP suite of engineering products.

Key duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Takes direction from and supports intermediate and senior staff to achieve project and business goals
  • Displays personal leadership in completion of work tasks
  • Makes basic decisions with input from intermediate and senior staff
  • Contributes to projects with a major focus on data collection and processing with an increasing role in analysis, interpretation, and basic designs
  • Contributes to sections of reports including description of investigations, results and analysis
  • Providing geotechnical services and technical advice on moderate complex tailings issues to clients (external & internal) on projects within the mining industry
  • Using advanced techniques, modifications and extension of theories, practices to synthesise and analyse data for decision making / recommendations
  • Analysing tailings and geotechnical reporting for projects which may include the design and inspection of mine waste storage facilities, the construction of tailings storage facilities, including operations and management of tailings.
  • Analyse the properties and behaviour of tailings, including stability analysis for dams, earthworks, and civil infrastructure
  • Providing supervision (quality assurance) for earthwork and liner installation for tailings dams and associated mine waste infrastructure
  • Understands and follows company health & safety policy and procedures
  • Participating in training activities

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Relevant degree (BEng or BSc) in Civil or Geological Engineering including 7 years plus experience post-graduation with developed specialist skills in geotechnical engineering;
  • Honors degree (BEng or BSc) in the Geotechnical field preferred
  • Candidate registration at GhIE preferred
  • Legislation related to engineering design supporting water use and waste management license applications;
  • Financial knowledge (General understanding of Work in Progress, Accounts Receivables and DSOs);
  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel (Advanced), MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, MS Projects, slope stability analysis, seepage analysis and modelling software. Proficiency in other engineering related software will be considered beneficial;
