Senior Automation Hardware Engineer

Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior Automation Hardware Engineer to support a high-profile client across projects within the UK. The Senior Automation Hardware Engineer will join our Systems Integration team within our Digital Consulting business.

There is a requirement for hybrid working with three days in one of our Hub offices. As this position is mainly to support an Aberdeen based project the preference would be to be based out of our Aberdeen office. However, we will also consider applications from Glasgow, Stockton or Staines.

This is for a 12 month contract on a ltd co basis out with IR35.

Please note applicants must be able to pass HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.

The Scope

We are looking for a hands-on Senior Automation Hardware Engineer with expertise in Siemens PLCs and traditional relay-based control systems. This role involves designing and configuring automation hardware for industrial processes, with a focus on integrating legacy relay logic with modern PLC-based control system architectures. This will include design and implementation of hardware solutions for process automation.

Our Systems Integration (SI) team, work with a variety of high-profile clients across the energy sector. Delivering bespoke essential automation and control solutions that enable a safer and more efficient operation.

Within SI, we are architecting our clients' digital ecosystems to be inherently safe, cybersecure and operable. Within our teams we integrate client source systems across their IT, Operational Technology (OT) environments, securely pushing OT data into IT systems as a foundation for transformation.

We design and integrate operational technology to achieve business, production, and operational goals.

Responsibilities

The key objectives for this role are:

  • Automation architectures for system PLCs
  • Specification of all automation and control panel hardware
  • Develop panel equipment layouts, cable routing and management, IO and power wiring schemes
  • Development and selection of wiring typicals for field sensors and actuators
  • Collaborate with control and Instrument engineers, instrument designers, Functional safety, and Cyber Security and Software engineers, to progress Automation design to ensure seamless integration of hardware with control logic.
  • Conduct hardware, troubleshooting, and validation at FAT/SAT
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and client specifications.
  • Produce, review and maintain associated documentation including Panel General arrangement drawings, BOMs, Power & Heat calculations, wiring schematics, layouts, block diagrams, test documents and reports etc
  • Conduct and/or support, meetings, site surveys commissioning and startup activities at client sites as required
  • Familiarity and experience of working within both Industry Standards such as IEC standards & IEE wiring regulations as well as Client specifications

Expected:

  • Typically qualified to ISCED Level 6 (Bachelors) in engineering or equivalent combination of qualifications and experience
  • Experience of Siemens PCS7
  • Experience of Relay based logic solvers preferred but not expected
