Manager, Counselling & Support Services

This position is responsible to the Director, Mental Health, Addictions, and Developmental Services. As a member of the Leadership Team, the incumbent is responsible to the Director for the day-to-day co-ordination/monitoring and management of their program areas. The incumbent will perform tasks of a confidential nature, which includes information regarding staff, clients, management, and financial matters.

The Manager is responsible for leading and managing the delivery of a number of programs under the Mental Health, Addictions, and Developmental Services (MHADS) portfolio. Oversight includes the Counselling and Support Services program, the Walk-in Counselling service, Central Intake, SCOPE, Youth Outreach Team, and Health Access Taylor Massey (HATM) and related staff, including the IPC team. The Manager is further responsible for providing leadership and coordination for support groups offered through the MHADS portfolio.

What You Will Do

  • Provides ongoing orientation and supervision to all program staff; conducts annual performance appraisals; and ensures ongoing staff professional development.
  • Provides direction and support to staff regarding program issues; engages in team building and debriefing of crises incidents through individual meetings with staff and in team meetings; provides clinical supervision.
  • Ensures the recruitment and hiring of qualified staff under the procedures of the Collective Agreement.
  • Provides direct supervision of Central Intake and Health Access Taylor Massey and related program staff.
  • In collaboration with the Director, ensures the planning and implementation of a staff development program for the program areas.
  • Ensures the effective utilization of volunteers and students throughout the program areas and ensures a program of support and training for them.

Program Oversight

  • Carries out the management responsibilities for operating the program areas, including planning and evaluation to ensure the strategic unit directions and objectives are achieved.
  • Assists the Director in the preparation and monitoring of the programs' financial information and program area budgets.
  • Ensures the program' statistical information systems operate within the organization's management information systems policies and procedures.
  • Prepares statistical reports, program reports and submissions.
  • Perform needs assessment to identify service needs and gaps that can be addressed through program areas.
  • In consultation with the Director, responds to community needs and ensures existing and new program development ideas will meet these needs.
  • Ensures that program and funder targets are met.

Community Relations and Partnerships

  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with community partner agencies.
  • Supports development and growth of HATM through strategic partnership engagement and development.
  • Maintains and develops contacts with other Mental Health/Addictions groups and community agencies and attends external meetings.

General

  • Represents the Unit and/or MHADS portfolio on internal committees.
  • Engages in ongoing training and education to upgrade skills to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
  • Ensures that programs are responsive, and culturally and linguistically sensitive, to the individual and caregivers needs.
  • Upholds and consistently incorporates into practice harm reduction, trauma-informed, anti-racism and anti-oppressive principles.
  • Carries out additional management duties as identified from time to time by the Director.

What You Bring to the Team

  • M.S.W. or Post-Graduate degree in a related area and/or combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Registration and in good standing with the College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or another relevant regulatory body (i.e. CPRO).
  • Minimum 3 years management experience preferably in the Community sector and unionized environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of issues affecting marginalized communities, policies, legislation, programs, and other issues related to scope of practice and social determinant of health.
  • Thorough knowledge of counselling approaches and modalities.
  • Experience in providing clinical supervision to social workers and/or other mental health professionals and trainees.
  • Demonstrated experience building strong relationships with external and internal partners.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated skills in program development and evaluation, financial management, and leadership skills.
  • Strong organizational and team building skills.
  • Experience working with and supporting diverse communities.
  • Outstanding communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to work within a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity to changing situations and needs.
  • Personal knowledge and lived/living experience of issues that affect communities and populations served by WoodGreen is a strong asset.
  • Proficiency in second language, written and oral, is a strong asset.
