This Food Service Supervisor is located within the Nutrition & Food Service at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI. This announcement will be used to fill vacancies. The purpose of the position is to provide food service supervision in the Nutrition and Food Services Department. Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to): supervising all areas of food production and service, taking corrective action for any problems that might arise on the floors pertaining to food service, receiving and inspecting deliveries and requisitioning all supplies needed in all food service areas, preparing performance ratings/competencies for all employees under their direct supervision, discussing work performance and problems with employees, monitoring tardiness and attendance, providing guidance and making necessary adjustments in assignments when necessary, carrying out the responsibilities of the position within general instructions, standard procedures and established policies, ensuring subordinates complete the tasks to which they are assigned, establishing priorities for daily operations in the event of emergency situations, defining the standards of quality and quantity to be met, serving as a member of the in-service training team by providing individual and/or group instruction for employees, providing guidance and assistance for lower grade employees in making decision when assembling patient trays and utilizing correct foods to be served on modified diets, maintaining inventory of food service supplies and equipment, conducting quality assurance monitors and sanitation reviews, supervising the delivery and retrieval of patient trays which includes interacting with members of the multidisciplinary team, and performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/04/2025. I have a working knowledge of the food service industry to include experience with basic, specialized and/or modified diets, food portioning, preparing menu options. I am capable of following instructions and can follow proper food handling guidelines. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Effort/Requirements: Supervise in the preparation of foods for cooking and service, assist with cooking and baking; serve personnel and patients; set and clear dining room tables; wash dishes, kitchen utensils and equipment; clean and scrub kitchen, dining room, storeroom and refrigerator. Working Conditions: Subject to extremes of hot and cold; exposed to minor cuts, bruises, burns and scalds that would occur in a kitchen environment. Fire or explosion is a potential hazard. Customer Service: Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
