Job Summary: The College of Engineering at West Texas A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, with a focus on solid mechanics and federally funded research connected to materials science for energy applications and/or water engineering. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in mechanical, industrial, or civil engineering, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

We seek an engaged scholar and educator with the ability to teach fundamental engineering courses such as statics, mechanics of materials, and related solid mechanics topics that serve as the foundation for multiple engineering disciplines. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated commitment to innovative pedagogy, student engagement in early engineering education, and applied research that aligns with the needs of rural and regional communities. The ideal candidate will also contribute to the university's broader research mission through externally funded projects and graduate student mentorship.

The College of Engineering includes 45 full-time faculty, over 750 undergraduate and 120 graduate students across programs in mechanical, civil, electrical, and environmental engineering, engineering technology, computer science, and mathematics. We are committed to student-centered learning, industry collaboration, and research with real-world impact, particularly in rural regions like the Texas Panhandle.

Work Performed: Tenure-track faculty are expected to:

  • Establish a sustainable, nationally recognized research program.
  • Recruit and mentor graduate students through externally funded research.
  • Publish high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship.
  • Innovate in teaching and curriculum development.
  • Engage in institutional, professional, and community service.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical, Industrial, Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline (required).
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate engineering courses, with emphasis on solid mechanics and foundational courses.
  • Demonstrated potential for impactful research and external funding.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring students at all levels.
  • Capacity to contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration across programs.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Academic, industry, or teaching background in Mechanical Engineering core areas.
