The Engineering Intern is an entry level engineering position. This position is responsible for working with the HFS NPD engineering team assisting the development of new products or processes, including identifying product improvements and researching new technologies. The position will be on-site at the Fort Myers, FL facility and report to the NPD engineering Manager.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all safety rules and regulations and support management in the enforcement of the same.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of HFS products, assembly methods and process improvements.
  • Support manufacturing and quality in implementing actions and solutions to process and production issues.
  • Validates engineering solutions using simulation, prototyping and hands-on testing.
  • Research and validate new technologies for product development
  • Identifies and implements opportunities for standardization and improvements for manufacturing, ergonomics and engineering documentation.
  • Develop standard work procedures for new manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in Kaizen/Continuous Improvement or Failure Analysis efforts.
  • Support research of information for capital equipment requests (CARA)
  • Conduct competitor comparisons, analysis, testing and issuing reports of results.
  • Responsibility directly tied to Watts Value (Integrity, Accountability, Continuous Improvement, Transparency)

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate program in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, at the Sophomore or Junior level.
  • Demonstrated drive and eagerness to learn, with a proactive attitude toward supporting product development and engineering initiatives.
  • Ability to apply principles of mechanical/electrical design, materials science, testing, and engineering processes to real-world solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach to working in team environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
  • Preferred: Prior exposure to manufacturing processes such as machining, drilling, or fabrication.
  • Preferred: Experience with 2D/3D CAD design and 3D printing technologies.

Working Conditions

While performing the job duties, you will be working on-site at a manufacturing facility and will perform the majority of your duties in an office environment. You may, at times, be required to be present on the manufacturing floor and will be required to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment. You will be required to work in the office at the Fort Myers, FL location (Monday – Friday). Your scheduled work hours will be communicated to you by your manager.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to remain seated at a desk or workstation for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks like typing on a keyboard or using a mouse for extended periods.
  • Ability to physically move around the office, organize or transport files, packages, or other office-related materials.
  • Ability to read documents, use a computer, and perform data entry tasks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with management and coworkers, particularly in meetings or phone calls.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computers, printers, phones, and copiers.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry light objects, such as office supplies, documents, or small equipment.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to push and pull up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to physically move around manufacturing floor.
  • Ability to read documents and communicate clearly with management and coworkers.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, which may include, but is not limited to, safety shoes, hearing protection, and safety glasses.
