Senior Photonics Design Engineer

The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.

We are seeking a Senior Photonics Design Engineer. As a key leader, you will shape the future of laser communication systems, from concept through on-orbit activities. Your leadership will set the standard for new capabilities and a growing range of customer missions. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Define requirements, design system architectures, and conduct trade studies for photonics systems. Select and integrate photonic and electronic components into laser communication system designs. Validate system performance through environmental testing. Support prototype payload build and testing phases. Analyze test data to characterize performance, failure modes, and solutions to enhance system reliability. Maintain detailed documentation of designs, test procedures, and results. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software, DSP, optics, and manufacturing.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 7 years of experience in engineering roles supporting complex systems such as lasers, optics, electronics, or aerospace hardware with at least 3 years in lead engineer roles.
• Demonstrated experience with photonics systems involving fiber-based Electro-Optic Modulators and Receivers.
• In-depth knowledge of lasers, photonics, photo-diodes, nonlinear optics, fiber optic assembly, and laser systems fabrication.
• Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures.
• Proficiency in system characterization, environmental testing, and data analysis.
• Ability to communicate technical information to broad audiences and collaborate with colleagues.
• MS Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics/Optical Sciences, or a related field; OR equivalent work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• 10 years of experience in engineering roles supporting complex systems (e.g., lasers, optics, electronics, or aerospace hardware), with at least 5 years in lead engineer roles.
• Expertise in telecommunications, including familiarity with high data rate optical transmission, modulation techniques, signal processing, and coherent reception techniques.
• Experience deploying systems in spaceflight environments.
• Experience in building and running test frameworks with tools such as MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, or other related languages.
• Experience with Design for Manufacturing and manufacturing process improvement initiatives.
• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics/Optical Sciences, or a related field.

Compensation Range for: CA applicants is $152,235.00-$213,127.95; CO applicants is $139,979.00-$195,969.90; WA applicants is $152,235.00-$213,127.95 Other site ranges may differ
