Volocopter

A German aviation company specializing in the development of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for urban air mobility.

Electric Propulsion System Integration Engineer

At Volocopter, we are shaping the future of urban air mobility with our pioneering electrically powered vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Our high and low voltage systems, including batteries, motors, DC/DC converters, and low voltage components, are critical to ensuring the safety and efficiency of our aircraft. As an Electrical System Integration Engineer, you will develop comprehensive test plans and procedures, validate system requirements and designs, and set up representative test systems for rigorous failure tests. Your work ensures compliance with aerospace standards under EASA supervision and contributes to the continuous advancement of our technology.

Your mission during this flight:

  • Develop detailed test plans and procedures for failure tests, load shedding, short circuit tests, and momentary interruptions to guarantee system reliability.
  • Own and develop system performance criteria by defining requirements and mission profiles, ensuring successful integration of all propulsion components.
  • Plan and coordinate the setup of test infrastructure, including selecting appropriate tools, measurement equipment, and tap points.
  • Utilize simulation models (e.g., Matlab, Amesim, LTSpice) to optimize testing processes and reduce the number of physical tests required.
  • Validate system and component level requirements, ensuring thorough documentation and compliance with aerospace standards (ARP4754A, SC-VTOL, etc.).
  • Write clear and precise system requirements to guide design and development efforts.
  • Conduct ground tests and flight tests on actual aircraft to verify system performance and reliability under real-world conditions.
  • Collaborate closely with the test infrastructure team and individual system engineers responsible for batteries, motors, DC/DC converters, etc.
  • Support other engineering teams as needed in system modeling and requirements creation within the requirements management system.
  • Engage with key stakeholders, including EASA panel experts for electric systems and propulsion, and internal Compliance Verification Engineers (CVE).
  • Contribute to the design and improvement of next-generation systems, focusing on fuse coordination, contactor/switch selection, power distribution, and HV architecture.

Successful milestones:

  • Acceptance of the Electric Propulsion Functional & Short Circuit certification test plans.
  • Achievement of test readiness.
  • Successful execution of tests with EASA witnessing.
  • Validation of system requirements and design.
  • Completion of ground and flight tests verifying system performance.

Check in your professional skills:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5 to 8 years of experience with electrical systems in fields such as electric cars, electric airplanes, fuel cell systems, or electric drivetrains.
  • Experience in aerospace projects is a significant advantage, though other functional safety projects (e.g., ISO26262) are relevant.
  • Proficient in simulation tools such as Matlab, Amesim, LTSpice.
  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, Integrity).
  • Strong organizational skills and initiative, confident in technical discussions.
  • Fluent in English.

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of Li-ion batteries, brushless DC motor control, DC power distribution, digital communication buses, and/or model-based systems engineering (MBSE).
  • Familiarity with Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
  • Knowledge of ARP4754A, SC-VTOL, ARP4761, and other aerospace safety standards.
  • Experience with advanced electrical technologies and emerging trends in the aerospace industry.
  • Knowledge of avionics systems and their integration with electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with aircraft electrical power distribution systems.
  • Understanding of system safety and reliability engineering principles.
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering and architectural modeling tools.
  • Knowledge of system-level testing and verification methodologies.

Our Volocopter flight includes:

  • Fast-growing high-tech company with a superb network of investors and partners
  • Chance to shape the future of aviation
  • Help us to create groundbreaking new projects - from scratch!
  • Personal accountability, as well as growth and learning opportunities, based on your personal strengths
  • An inspiring workplace with modern workspaces, flexible hours, quick decision-making, a flat hierarchy, positive leadership, great team spirit
  • Attractive compensation package
  • Diversity at Volocopter: Our differences are what make us great. Here at Volocopter, we value equal opportunities and trust. As air mobility industry innovators, we believe that changing the world starts on team level. We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
