Technical Assistant

This position performs advanced technical/engineering problem solving in support of nuclear plant operations. This role is responsible for providing technical advice in support of critical technical decisions. The successful candidate possesses excellent knowledge in functional discipline and its practical application and has detailed knowledge of applicable industry codes and regulations. This role is the primary owner of all Reactor Services tooling and equipment including fuel handling equipment; works with fellow Technical Assistants and the Fleet team to drive consistency in both processes and tooling across the Vistra Fleet Reactor Services Team.

Key Accountabilities

  • Primary owner of fuel handling equipment to include PM schedules, corrective maintenance tracking, and upgrade implementation.
  • Primary owner of reactor services tooling to include PM schedules, corrective maintenance tracking, upgrades, replacements and budgeting. Responsible for coordinating with RP / Decon to support RCA work to perform tooling rebuilds and work. Coordinate with OEM to develop long term tooling health programs for each tool.
  • Drive elimination of deficient conditions for Refueling Services tooling and equipment (critical and non-critical) to manage the work order backlog and refueling equipment reliability.
  • Provide assistance with tooling assessments to validate fleet tooling needs and coordinates with the other Fleet Technical Assistants to ensure that tooling is consistent across the Vistra fleet and synergies are maximized.
  • Provide in-depth technical expertise to assist with the development of engineering change packages.
  • Provide technical expertise and consultation through direct involvement to identify and resolve equipment and system problems.
  • Create and track technical tasks to ensure completion of reliability/design/performance issues with head area maintenance and underwater tooling and equipment.
  • Perform basic technical tasks assigned by supervision applying general engineering principles.
  • Assist with the preparation of plans and specifications, verifying that they are accurate, complete, and timely and that they have maintained proper configuration management and used standard practices, design criteria, procedures and code.
  • Work as part of the fleet team to evaluate Reactor Services activities and recommend equipment, new concepts and techniques to improve performance, reduce costs, correct design, or improve worker safety.
  • Provide planning support as allowed by site contract for work orders for site refueling services.
  • Gain access to P6, become proficient and work with the outage scheduler to develop the Refueling Services outage schedules.
  • Perform safety and human performance observations of refueling services personnel during outage and non-outage work periods.
  • Must be willing to travel to other Vistra Nuclear Plants in support of outages, dry cask storage, and outage prep activities. Additional travel may be required for training at various OEM facilities as well as benchmarking opportunities at workshops and other utilities.
  • All other job assignments and/or duties pursuant to company policy as approved by the Fleet Director of Refueling Services.
  • Support outages as needed to assist in delivering outage goals. Attend outage readiness meetings as required.
  • Recognizing outages periods are the highest risk period for Nuclear safety; Assist the Site Manager to drive readiness to minimize risk.
  • Support applicable Outage Milestone closure and adherence to ensure work readiness.
  • Support a pool ERO position.

Education, Experience, & Skill Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (chemical, civil/structural, electrical, industrial, mechanical or nuclear) or technical discipline (e.g. chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics) with 3 years of industry OR
  • Current or previous Senior Reactor Operator or Reactor Operator license with 3 years of industry experience OR
  • Associates/non-technical 2-year degree/completion or a relevant, skilled trades apprenticeship program (e.g., boilermaker, pipefitter, operating engineer) with 5 years of Reactor Services industry experience OR
  • 5 years of Military experience either in the Navy Nuclear program or a similar technical program OR
  • High school diploma/GED with 7 years of Reactor Services industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced engineering / technical degree or related coursework or Training
  • Fuel Handling Qualifications, Experience and/or Knowledge (advanced industrial maintenance experience and knowledge may be substituted)
  • Knowledge of Lifting, Rigging and Material Handling Industry Standards
  • Proficient and knowledgeable in typical IT applications, Microsoft Office Suite, Work Management Software (Maximo), Scheduling Software (P6), etc.
  • Technical Writing Experience
  • Supervisory Qualifications and Experience
