Lead Mechanical Engineer

MELD Manufacturing Corporation is a leader in the development and production of our patented MELD solid-state metal additive manufacturing technology. Our process is a paradigm shift in the industry, enabling the creation and repair of high-performance, large-scale metal parts without melting the material. We are a fast-growing, innovative company committed to delivering revolutionary solutions to the aerospace, defense, and heavy equipment industries. We are looking for a skilled and experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team and help us drive the next generation of MELD machine design.

Position Summary: As the Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will be a key member of our engineering team, responsible for the design, analysis, and validation of our advanced MELD additive manufacturing systems. You will play a critical role in the product lifecycle, from initial concept through production, with a strong focus on defining and controlling the technical documentation that makes it all possible. This role requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of configuration management processes. You will lead the mechanical design efforts for new machine development and continuous improvement projects, ensuring our products are robust, scalable, and fully documented.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Development: Lead the mechanical design of new MELD machines and sub-systems, from concept to production. This includes developing detailed mechanical drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • BOM Management: Take ownership of the Bill of Materials (BOM) for MELD machines and sub-systems. This includes creating, maintaining, and auditing accurate BOMs to ensure alignment between engineering designs, procurement, and manufacturing.
  • Change Order Management: Lead the Engineering Change Request (ECR) and Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes. You will review, analyze, and approve all mechanical design changes, ensuring they are properly documented, tracked, and implemented with minimal disruption to production.
  • Specification Creation: Develop and maintain comprehensive engineering specifications for MELD machines, sub-systems, and key components. This includes writing detailed technical requirements, performance criteria, and acceptance test procedures that ensure products meet internal quality standards and customer requirements.
  • Engineering Analysis: Conduct advanced engineering analysis to validate design concepts for structural integrity, thermal performance, and vibration. Utilize simulation tools to optimize designs for performance and cost.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor and guide engineering staff and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of electrical, software, and manufacturing engineers to ensure seamless integration of all machine components.
  • Prototyping and Testing: Support the prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical designs. Develop and execute test plans to verify performance against design requirements and identify areas for improvement.
  • Process and Quality Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives for existing products, addressing customer feedback and manufacturing challenges. Implement design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA) principles.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive engineering documentation, including design files, analysis reports, change requests (ECRs), and technical specifications.
  • Supplier and Vendor Collaboration: Work closely with suppliers and vendors to specify, source, and validate mechanical components and sub-systems.
