These are the mission-critical systems that keep our nation secure and resilient. We're seeking a Journeyman Cloud Engineer to join us at the U.S. Coast Guard C5ISC in Alexandria, VA. In this hands-on role, you'll design and lead transformative cloud initiatives that power critical Coast Guard operations. Leveraging deep expertise in AWS, Azure, and Python, you'll architect scalable cloud-native solutions, guide development efforts, and ensure best practices across architecture, deployment, and security—while mentoring and driving innovation that directly strengthens national security.

A 75% remote-work schedule does not preclude employees from reporting to a nearby on-site location when necessary. Being available for in-person visits and meetings is required for this role.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and deployment of scalable and secure cloud solutions across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of reference architectures, design patterns, and cloud implementation standards.
  • Work closely with senior cloud engineers to ensure solutions align with established best practices for performance, reliability, and security.
  • Support modernization activities, including application migration efforts, basic containerization tasks, and adoption of microservices frameworks.
  • Help implement DevOps practices by developing automation scripts, supporting infrastructure-as-code (IaC) configurations, and assisting with CI/CD pipeline activities.
  • Perform routine cloud performance monitoring, helping identify potential issues and opportunities for cost, reliability, or scalability improvements.
  • Support the configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of cloud security controls, including IAM policies, Zero Trust concepts, and defense-in-depth practices.
  • Help ensure solutions meet internal compliance requirements and support activities related to SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, or government frameworks.
  • Participate in cloud security reviews and assist in identifying, tracking, and resolving basic vulnerabilities.
  • Collaborate with operations, development, security, and product teams to support the delivery of integrated cloud solutions.
  • Assist with onboarding customers to cloud services, ensuring alignment with established processes and support pathways.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of architectures, deployment steps, standards, and operational procedures to enable team knowledge sharing and continuity.

Basic Qualification

Requires BS and 2+ years of prior relevant experience or Masters with less then 2 years of prior relevant experience, additional years of experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree. Minimum 2 year of Administration experience with cloud-based applications (MS O365, SharePoint, Azure AD, AWS). Hands-on experience administering Windows Server environments, including system creation, configuration, upgrades, migrations, and patch management. Strong understanding of Active Directory, Azure AD, SAML, and related standards, policies, and procedures. Proficient with major cloud platforms and tools, including AWS Console, Azure, Elastic, Ansible, Jira, Confluence, Git, Bitbucket, and various SaaS solutions. Experience onboarding and integrating customer log data from AWS and Azure into on-premises or cloud-based analytics platforms such as Elastic or Splunk. Skilled in supporting AWS cloud-hosted applications, including deployments, patching, security checks, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Demonstrated ability to develop, optimize, and document administrative processes, SOPs, and operational workflows for improved efficiency and consistency. Works collaboratively with SMEs and security teams to design and implement secure, compliant cloud architectures. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. Performs day-to-day operational support, including issue troubleshooting, change management, and problem resolution in production environments. Hands-on experience with Databricks and Kafka is highly desirable. Proficiency with Power BI and API management tools is a strong advantage. Must be able to obtain a Public Trust. Must, at a minimum, have one of these certifications: MCSE (Server), Certified AWS SysAdmin, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, AWS Certified Developer, AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Dev/Associate), AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, AWS Certified Advanced Networking, AWS Certified Security, Azure Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect
