Software Engineer II

The Software Engineer position will design, develop and maintain ERP applications and integration solutions to support all aspects of NI&S operations to include business management systems, technology infrastructure management systems and automation solutions in a cloud based AWS environment. As a member of the Software Development team this position will support advanced network, communications, public safety, cable television, and data center services. This position will have a significant focus on network and systems automation and integration. Virginia Tech networks utilize multiple vendor routing, switching, and wireless technologies. The campus core and border consist of a sophisticated architecture that serves as the high-speed backbone for network services that meet the operational, academic, social, and research needs of over 33,000 students and 8,000 faculty/staff. Additionally, NI&S manages a Zoom voice system that supports almost 10,000 voice services and E911 service for university sites across the state of Virginia. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Software Development and as a member of the Software Development team works closely with members of the Network Engineering team, Applications Administration team and Product team. The Software Engineer is expected to:

- Design, develop and maintain network and system automation and integration solutions that integrate with the Organization's ERP systems to standardize and simplify the deployment, configuration, maintainability, and management of network infrastructure and voice services to improve staff efficiencies and service reliability and ensure compliance with security and operational standards

- Design, develop and maintain both front-end and back-end web ERP and customer portal applications that support all aspects of NI&S operations to include business management systems and technology infrastructure management systems

- Troubleshoot application and automation issues throughout the entire technology stack to include AWS infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, application code and network and systems integrations

- Provide excellent customer service and technical support to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve application issues

- Expand on relevant skill sets by actively participating in approved professional development opportunities such as training sessions and conferences

Required Qualifications:

- Master of Science degree in Computer Science or related field.

- 3 years of experience developing software in an enterprise environment at a major research university.

- 3 years of experience with modern languages and technologies, such as Node.js, Javascript, Java, Python, React etc.

- 3 years of experience with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle.

- 3 years of experience with container-based development environments such as Docker or Kubernetes.

- 3 years of experience with cloud-based development (e.g. AWS).

- 3 years of experience with CI/CD environment.

- 3 years of experience developing applications that integrate with external software systems via technology such as REST, LDAP, messaging systems etc.

- 2 years of experience working with product teams and stakeholders to design and implement technology solutions.

- 2 years of experience working with network and network automation technologies.

- Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills.

- AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate).

- AWS Certified Solutions Developer (Associate).

- Demonstrated domain knowledge of network and network automation technologies through one or more of the following certifications: JNCIA-DevOps, Cisco DevNet or equivalent.

Overtime Status: Exempt: Not eligible for overtime.

Appointment Type: Regular.

Salary Information: Salary commensurate with experience.

Hours per week: 40.
