Job Duties

The Shoreline Engineer will:

1. Provide technical assistance and inspections services for citizens, conservation partners, and environmental regulatory agencies on options available to protect property from shoreline and streambank erosion.
2. Participate or assist to ensure availability for response to shoreline erosion related projects or activities and provide input for area/division meetings.
3. Provide reviews and comments on technical and scientific projects and documents relating to shoreline and stream bank erosion.
4. Provide technical assistance related to tidal shoreline and non-tidal stream bank erosion, channel stability, and riparian buffer restoration to agencies, local governments, and organizations for small watershed management plans as requested.
5. Educate general public, Wetland Boards, PDCs, SWCDs, targeted groups and federal/state/local agencies on the programs available through DCR/DSWC.
6. Provide monthly reports on activities and progress of the program, including reports requested by the Area Manager and Central Office. Includes tracking and reporting reduction credits related to shoreline practices.
7. Follow all applicable federal, state, agency, and division policies relating to Tracking and Reporting data for grants and programs by specified deadlines as applicable.
8. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
9. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience with and/or working knowledge of applying engineering procedures and practices for site specific shoreline and other streambank problems.
• Knowledge of construction practices.
• Experience working one-on-one with the public to provide technical recommendations.
• Ability to work without close supervision.
• Experience with communicating orally and in writing with diverse groups of people from varying economic and educational situations.
• Must possess strong written communication skills and experience with reporting data and completing written reports.

Additional Considerations

• Experience with and/or working knowledge of engineering or other related scientific field providing a knowledge of one or more of the following: coastal processes, environmental sciences, marine sciences, marine construction, structural design, hydraulics.
