Network Engineer & Infrastructure

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Incumbents will assist in the implementation and maintenance of network architectures, including LANs/WLANs/WANs, LAN internetworking, and connections with the WAN environment on the college's four campuses and several branch offices. Is expected to assist in the identification of hardware and software technical problems and malfunctions related to LANs/WLAN's/WANs, routers, switches, wireless controllers, and related devices. Assists with throughput analysis, maintenance and configuration of software, problem solving, building and configuration of virtual machines, and infrastructure planning. Helps locate necessary tools and processes to identify troublesome trends as they develop. Participates in various IT projects intended to continually improve/upgrade the telecommunications infrastructure's ability to support voice, video, and data. In order to perform duties required of this position, this employee requires a LAN account and access to general network services. Incumbent has administrator rights to designated college computers to support information technology applications and infrastructure.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of enterprise networking standards and configurations for integrated voice, video and data networks.
  • Ability to install and troubleshoot telecommunications and network hardware and software including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless systems.
  • Knowledge of Windows Server and server hardware.
  • Ability to conduct technical research, analyze telecommunications and networking problems, and develop optimum solutions.
  • Ability to evaluate the products and services of network and telecommunications services, systems and equipment.
  • Ability to provide technical support for network and telecommunication problems and issues for LAN/WLAN and WAN that have been escalated beyond the capability of the campus technical support staff.
  • Ability to use desktop computers using Windows 10/11 operating systems and Microsoft Office 20XX/365 software packages.
  • Ability to assist in the development and maintenance of a procedural manual for the operation and support of telecommunications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to lift objects greater than 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb a ladder.
  • Industry appropriate certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Circo Certified Network Professional (CCNP), or equivalent experience.
  • Formal training related to electronic technology or to the installation and repair of telecommunications hardware and peripheral devices or equivalent experience.
  • Experience installing and troubleshooting routers, switches, wireless system components, servers, UPSs, fiber and copper cabling.
  • Experience in the development, operation, and maintenance of LAN/WLAN/WANs using network protocols and standards.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience in the installation, maintenance and testing of fiber optic cables and connection boxes.
  • Knowledge of various Cisco Operating Systems (IOS-XE, IOS-XR).
  • Knowledge of Palo Alto Networks NGFW hardware platforms.
  • Knowledge of Linux Operating Systems.
  • Knowledge of various Aruba Operating Systems (AOS-8, AOS-S, AOS-CX).
