Application Services Manager

Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Application Services Manager. This position provides leadership, technical direction, and staff supervision for the Application Services team as well as hands-on participation in some projects. Their goal is to deliver high-quality, reliable and secure applications and integrations with a strong focus on customer service. They work closely with IT leadership and decision makers in other departments in order to provide cost-effective technology solutions, successfully meet associated project objectives and help shape an innovative IT strategy that aligns with university needs. This person is also responsible for coordinating access to our SIS/ERP application and database along with any third-party integrations to that data. This position is also tasked with roles of Data Owner and Custodian and is responsible for the policy and practice decisions regarding use and control of that data. This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and offers a hybrid work schedule. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, technical direction, and staff supervision for the Application Services team, which includes database administration, programming and analysis, data integrations, and application support.
  • Work closely with IT leadership and decision makers in other departments to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support cost-effective technology solutions for all aspects of the organization.
  • Serve as a strategic partner in managing the efforts of joint project teams of clients and ITS staff to successfully meet project objectives on schedule, within budget, adhere to high quality standards, and meet customer expectations.
  • Act as a creative and strategic technology/business thinker with the vision to look beyond Longwood’s current value propositions to help shape an innovative IT strategy that aligns with university needs.
  • Collaborate closely with the user community to determine how technology might assist in addressing their needs, either by capitalizing on emerging technologies or by adapting technologies to the needs of the customer.
  • Maintain technical knowledge of the Ellucian Banner systems and interfaces to other applications.
  • Collaborate with IT staff and various functional departments to implement end-user solutions by assisting in data interpretation, recommending workflow improvements through current technology, and driving enhancements that benefit the university.
  • Provide training, development, and programming/reporting support for functional user areas.
  • Work to maintain high availability of Application Services systems and supporting subsystems.
  • Assist in analysis, design, and development as needed with the Application Services team while adhering to and promoting ITS development and change control standards and policies.
  • Take personal responsibility for proper data handling and promote best practices within the team.
  • Assist in maintaining Longwood’s Disaster Recovery Plan with a focus on ITS and Application Services.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent significant work experience in application and computer engineering services.
  • Considerable experience in a higher education technical environment preferred (Ellucian Banner System experience preferred).
  • Extensive knowledge of project management methodology, with the ability to adopt institution-specific approaches.
  • State of Virginia Project Management or PMP certification preferred; pursuit of certification is acceptable.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience successfully managing and coordinating cross-functional efforts, including medium (6-8 month) to large (8-12+ month) projects.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to learn new skills, tools, and technologies through training, hands-on experience, or observation.
  • Proven working knowledge in systems analysis, design, and development, as well as creating and maintaining automated processes, is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service and interact effectively with both internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with SQL and Oracle PL/SQL is preferred.
  • Basic Linux skills are preferred, including SSH, SFTP, finding and listing files and permissions, and navigating directories.

  • This position is a full-time, administrative & professional faculty, exempt position. Salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience.
