Vicinity Platform & DevOps Engineer

We're reimagining the way Australians live, work, and play. We own and manage some of the most recognisable and loved retail destinations across Australia.

We're evolving our portfolio into destinations that offer a broad selection of retail, residential, and office spaces. Through our diverse portfolio, data-led decision-making, and nationwide development pipeline, we do things differently.

We are Vicinity.

Role Purpose

The key purpose of the Platform & DevOps Engineer role is to design, build, and operate scalable cloud platforms that enable reliable and secure software delivery. The role is accountable for the stability, performance, and resilience of shared cloud foundations and CI/CD pipelines that underpin critical digital products and services. The role sits within the Platform Engineering team, responsible for improving reliability, automation, observability, and developer productivity. Working across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, the Platform & DevOps Engineer evolves CI/CD pipelines, embeds security and observability as standard, and partners with Web, Backend, and Mobile teams to enable continuous delivery and operational excellence at scale.

Key Accountabilities

DevOps & CI/CD Pipeline Management

  • Architect and maintain CI/CD pipelines: Design and optimize automated build, test, and deployment pipelines for Web, APIs, and Mobile (iOS/Android) using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or similar.
  • Automate mobile distribution: Manage app provisioning, code signing, and release management to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
  • Enable Developer Self-Service: Provide platform tooling and documentation that allow developers to provision resources and deploy code autonomously within established security guardrails.
  • Integrate Quality & Security Gates: Embed automated unit/UI testing and security scanning directly into the delivery pipelines.
  • Implement Observability & Monitoring: Establish telemetry, centralized logging, and proactive alerting to monitor system health, perform root-cause analysis, and track reliability metrics.

Cloud Infrastructure Management & Support

  • Configure and optimise the multi-cloud environment (primarily AWS and Azure).
  • Build and perform operations via Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like Terraform or Bicep.
  • Design and manage the ongoing operation of cloud environments to ensure availability, performance, security, and recoverability.
  • Develop reports providing insights on the state of the Cloud and pipeline health (e.g., build success rates, deployment frequency, and DORA metrics).

Security, Compliance & Resiliency

  • Implement security policies to protect cloud infrastructure and code repositories (DevSecOps).
  • Conduct regular security assessments and risk analyses to identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities.
  • Manage end-to-end resiliency, including High Availability, cross-region Disaster Recovery, and automated Cloud Backup/Restore.

Support & On-Call Operations

  • Incident Management: Act as a primary technical owner for high-priority incidents, performing rapid troubleshooting and resolution for cloud infrastructure and deployment pipeline failures.
  • On-Call Rotation: Participate in a scheduled 24/7 on-call rotation to provide after-hours support for critical production systems and mobile delivery services.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Lead post-incident reviews to identify systemic issues and implement automated long-term fixes to prevent recurrence.
  • Service Desk Escalation: Serve as the Tier 3 escalation point for the IT Support team regarding complex cloud networking, identity management (Entra ID/Okta), and platform-level issues.
  • Operational Documentation: Maintain clear runbooks and "Standard Operating Procedures" (SOPs) to empower the wider team to resolve common issues efficiently.

Key Role Relationships

  • IT Support
  • Core Technology
  • Functional Managers
  • Managed Service Providers
  • External Vendors
  • External Consultants

Experience & Capabilities

Essential Experience (What You Have Done)

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience implementing cloud solutions and DevOps pipelines
  • Proven experience in setting up centralized observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus/ELK, Datadog or native CloudWatch/Azure Monitor).
  • Demonstrated experience supporting full-stack development teams (Web/API) and mobile development streams (iOS/Android).
  • 5 years of enterprise IT experience, supported by professional qualifications in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in IT service management applying the ITIL framework (e.g., incident, problem, and change management) to DevOps platforms and cloud operations.

Critical Knowledge (What You Need To Know)

  • Full-Stack CI/CD & Mobile Distribution: Expertise in building automated pipelines for Web and Mobile (iOS/Android), including hands-on experience with Fastlane, Code Signing, and automated app store submission via GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps.
  • Multi-Cloud IaC Mastery (AWS & Azure): Proficiency in writing modular, reusable Terraform or Bicep code to manage infrastructure across both AWS and Azure, with a focus on state management and automated governance.
  • Platform Engineering & Self-Service: Ability to design "Golden Paths" and self-service tooling that allow developers to provision resources independently while maintaining security guardrails and compliance.
  • Observability & Data-Driven Operations: Deep understanding of telemetry (Metrics, Logs, Traces) to build proactive alerting and the ability to track DORA metrics to quantify engineering velocity and reliability.
  • Resiliency & Tier 3 Troubleshooting: Advanced knowledge of high-availability architectures, Cross-Region Disaster Recovery, and the ability to perform deep-dive Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on complex cloud networking and identity issues.

Capabilities (What You Can Do)

  • Ability to transform complex raw system data into actionable insights through effective visualization and dashboarding.
  • Expertise in automating the software development lifecycle (SDLC) for both general web/backend services and specialized mobile applications.
  • Demonstrated capability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues—from cloud service disruptions to broken mobile build pipelines.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills for working with diverse engineering teams.
