Collins Aerospace, an RTX company, is a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defense industry. Collins Aerospace has the capabilities, comprehensive portfolio, and expertise to solve customers' toughest challenges and to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global market. The Hurricane Mesa Test Facility (HMTF) is a unique test site tasked with validating ejection seat systems and subsystems. Tests include sled track tests and other energetic and subsystem performance tests. Sled tests involve state-of-the-art anthropometric manikins (akin to automotive industry manikins) at ejection velocities from zero airspeed/zero altitude to beyond the speed of sound (760+ mph ground speed). In addition to escape systems, HMTF tests a variety of other aerospace, transportation and defense technologies.

We are seeking a senior electrical engineer. This is a key role to provide critical support for test article design, creating new electronics and circuits, as well as supporting existing electrical systems. The role will work with internal and external customers in developing and supporting tests and other activities at HMTF. In addition to HMTF, this individual will provide electrical engineering expertise to the other ejection and propulsion sites in Colorado and California, requiring occasional travel. This work will include supporting the development of ejection seat and propulsion systems of many types.

  • Assure tests are conducted in accordance with approved test plans and established safety procedures
  • Initiate and lead projects to design new electronic circuits and maintain existing electrical systems and components related to test activities
  • Perform design and maintenance on rocket sled wiring, including both developing new sleds and support established sleds
  • Design and develop solutions for testing control and data collection using tools such as single board computers, FPGA, or basic electrical circuits
  • Programming new and upgrading existing software tools used to calculate track performance
  • Provide electrical engineering support to instrumentation engineers
  • Collaborate with other engineers on design, fabrication, and modification of test equipment and articles, in support of test programs and customer requirements

Site support:

  • Research and evaluate facility processes to reduce operating costs and improve data collection
  • Support facility maintenance, repairs, and test capability expansions throughout the 6,500-acre Hurricane Mesa Test Facility (HMTF)
  • Support engineering management and business development with creation of proposals for new business opportunities by identifying and estimating testing related to tasks
  • Perform other duties as required
  • Handling of energetic systems such as rocket motors

Qualifications you must have:

  • Typically requires a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an advanced degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience
  • Previous experience working in a test environment, in combination with related education and training
  • Strong analytical skills including knowledge of physics and dynamics
  • Coordinating technical projects and work teams
  • Presenting technical subject matter to internal and external customers

What we prefer:

  • Familiarity with aircraft cockpit, crew station, escape system, ejection seat, and crew systems
  • Handling propulsive and energetic devices
  • Familiarity with machining, welding, and fabricating
