Automation Controls Engineer

The Automation Controls Engineer role designs, delivers, and supports equipment solutions used in the manufacturing of batteries supporting implantable medical devices. They are responsible for the creation and maintenance of equipment solutions supporting both current and new battery production lines. This Engineer takes daily action to ensure key performance metrics are being met in production, and they assess if existing equipment is adequate to support production manufacturing requirements and will plan and execute continuous improvement upgrades as needed. This Engineer is responsible for taking appropriate actions to ensure daily completion of production goals and uses process yield and output data to make corrections, solve problems, and support Operations stakeholders. They will also support continuous improvement of the automation processes by interfacing with both Operations and New Product Development stakeholders including component design, process development, and quality to create a compliant solution for production equipment release and support. The process and equipment improvements involve leveraging site operational technology requirements, integration of software and hardware or management of a vendor performing integration, equipment R&R (repeatability & reproducibility) analysis, qualification and validation documentation, and support for system releases. The role will utilize software languages and environments including PLC structured text. This role is 100% onsite at our Brooklyn Center, MN manufacturing site. Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Develop and improve software applications to manufacture batteries utilizing software languages and environments preferably in PLC Ladder Logic and/or structured text.
  • Design, develop, and debug dedicated hardware and software, performing verification and validation activities, performing Measurement Systems Analysis (Gage R&R studies); all in support of equipment solution release for production manufacturing of batteries.
  • Deployment and qualification of equipment. Ensure appropriate documentation is maintained and completed for all technology programs transferred to product line specific areas.
  • Support design and qualification of new custom tooling/equipment (Requirements, Procurement, Commissioning, IQ/Gage R&R, Support).
  • Follow software application development procedures and demonstrate compliance through technical documentation generation.
  • Develop electromechanical technical solutions to complex problems that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.
  • Embrace a culture of driving toward high-quality designs, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Work is performed with moderate direction and partnership with more senior peers.
  • All activities must be performed in compliance with the Quality System.
  • Performs duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies, or governmental regulation.

  • Requires a Bachelors degree and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience OR PhD with 0 years relevant experience.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with automated assembly equipment
  • Solid experience with hands on equipment troubleshooting including conventional diagnostic tools and PLC software
  • Experience with Rockwell PLC's (CompactLogix and ControlLogix Platforms) and supporting software
  • Experience with Rockwell HMI's and associated software
  • Experience with 6 axis joint and SCARA robotics
  • Experience with scanners and vision systems (Cognex/Adept preferred)
  • Experience with servo and stepper motion control amplifiers controllers and position feedback devices
  • Experience with cutting and marking laser systems (Keyence)
  • Experience with automating manufacturing data acquisition, trending, and networking architecture
  • Proficiency with electrical systems. Able to review and understand schematics

The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
