Prototype Development Engineer

In this position, the Prototype Development Engineer will be responsible for the bring-up and maintenance of the labcar. We are looking for a hands-on engineer who specializes in troubleshooting and resolving issues. The engineer will support activities for prototype builds including component installation, triage of issues, implementing a fix on your own or by reaching out to relevant parties to get the support that you need. You will be part of the team that will conceptualize, design, engineer, develop and support the launch of next generation Vehicle Platform Architectures for electric vehicles at Ford.

What you'll do...

  • Assist with prototype development and testing on benches, labcars, and vehicles.
  • Duties include part installation, wiring, flashing software on modules, debugging networks (CAN / LIN / Ethernet / etc…), recording the status of the modules, labcar, and prototype vehicles.
  • Build and report the development integration progress & maturity for the test asset.
  • Work with the prototype team to create solutions that address their needs.
  • Troubleshoot issues with the prototype test assets as well as document and help triage issues.
  • Create test strategies and experiment designs to verify all prototype functions.
  • Coordinate with Systems Integration and cross-functional teams to track build changes and assist upcoming development iterations.
  • Support design reviews and demos using prototype test assets with quick troubleshooting and creative problem solving.
  • Support the prototype build events and fleet management duties.
  • Travel to support prototype vehicle builds, modifications, and test asset support.

You'll have...

  • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer or Software Engineering or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% Travel Required
  • Strong Electrical and Embedded Systems Engineering fundamentals.
  • 5+ years of experience working on hardware design, board bring-up and hardware integration
  • 5+ years of experience with Vehicle Network Protocols such as CAN, LIN & Automotive Ethernet
  • Experience and working knowledge of systems development, vehicle architecture, battery technologies, software/hardware tool development, motor calibration technologies, OBD calibration, functional safety, network and diagnostics process.
  • 3+ years of experience using embedded networking interface tools for automotive, aerospace or similar
  • Experience with electrical debugging of PCB Assemblies, including the ability to read electrical schematics
  • Experience writing test plans and procedures and providing go/no-go judgment

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems
  • Proficiency in fundamentals of vehicle architecture, embedded systems design, RTOSes and real-time networking
  • Experience in instrumenting sensors systems and using data acquisition tools for analysis
  • Experience in supporting product development from concept to deployment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • An eagerness to work cross-functionally in a dynamic environment where you are part of a high performing team
  • A systems approach to design and development with the desire and curiosity to strive for exceptional delivery execution and continuous improvement

This position is hybrid. Candidates who are in commuting distance to a Ford hub location may be required to be onsite four or more days per week.
