Spacecraft Battery Systems Engineer

CACI is looking for a Spacecraft Battery Systems Engineer to work with NASA's human-rated spacecraft systems in support of our Nation's space exploration initiative at NASA / Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. Candidates should have great interest in aerospace vehicles and systems, enjoy working with batteries, battery charge/discharge systems, and other battery technologies. This engineering position supports cell-level battery testing and inspection as well battery module materials and build-up for next generation space systems. Specific assignments will involve analysis of battery cell data to characterize battery designs. Work will include supporting thermal runaway testing as well as advancing technologies supporting innovation around calorimetric measurement. The ideal candidate has a background in the space-rated battery domain. This position requires a self-motivated, capable person with strong verbal and written communication skills. In addition to outstanding technical expertise, the individual must be very people savvy, have strong customer relationship skills, possess a positive team-player attitude, be flexible and willing to take on new assignments and responsibilities as they arise. Finally, the most qualified candidate will be an articulate speaker able to communicate complex technical ideas in a convincing manner, must share our passion for our Nation's Space Program, and share in the excitement of developing future human-rated space vehicles.

Support space system projects related to Li-Ion batteries. Perform destructive physical analysis of individual battery cells of varying chemistries and designs using computer tomography (CT) scan, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Review drawings and drawing changes for battery assemblies. Research new materials and construction methods to optimize battery weight reduction and battery safety and reliability. Participate in Test and Verification (T&V) activities including test procedure development and review, hardware troubleshooting, and hardware integration. Support T&V activities for the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Strategic Cell Reserve.

Required: Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident for access to USG facilities. B.S. in mechanical, chemical, material sciences, electrical, or other related engineering discipline. Prefer a minimum of 3-5 years of experience of relevant work experience. Experience can be for aerospace vehicles or in other industries, e.g., oil and gas. Experience greater than the minimum is highly valued. Must be flexible, open to new challenges in a dynamic environment, and possess strong technical expertise combined with strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities with little supervision. Must be highly mature and responsible, and team-oriented with strong communication skills and work ethic.

Desired: M.S. in mechanical, chemical, material sciences, electrical, or other related engineering discipline. Experience in the aerospace industry is a plus, particularly in the NASA JSC environment. Experience with software tools such as Labview, MATLAB, Creo, Tableau. Experience with mechanical design of batteries or battery systems.
