Firefighter (Basic Life Support)

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a firefighter (basic life support) assigned to a crew engaged in airfield, structural firefighting, crash-rescue operations; to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity; and to assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards to protect persons, property, or the environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing basic life support.
  • Driving and operating firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and airport rescue fire fighting (arff) vehicles.
  • Performing crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great.
  • Performing structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multistoried buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities.
  • Maintaining firefighting equipment and fire station facilities. Performing functional tests and inspections. Performing preventive maintenance on equipment and housekeeping duties associated with assigned facilities. Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.

Qualifications include:

  • At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade gs-07, or equivalent in other pay systems.
  • Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.
  • Rescue operations.
  • Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards.
  • Operation of fire communications equipment.
  • Controlling hazardous materials incidents.
  • Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

Additional requirements include:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
  • Must be under 37 years of age for initial appointment.
  • Must list current firefighter related licenses and certificates on resumes.
  • Must upload copies of certifications when submitting the resume to verify qualification requirements for the position.
