Role Summary

We're looking for an experienced Database Reliability Engineer to shape, automate, and support complex SQL Server environments—both on-premises and in the cloud. You'll lead critical migrations and installations, automate infrastructure as code, monitor system health, and build data pipelines using a variety of technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect, implement, and manage Microsoft SQL Server platforms (2008 onwards), including availability groups, replication, mirroring, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Plan and execute database migrations to Azure and AWS, including minimizing downtime and risk during transitions.
  • Build and maintain automated infrastructure through Ansible and Terraform, ensuring consistent provisioning and configuration of database environments.
  • Monitor database and infrastructure performance using Prometheus and Grafana, establish dashboards and alerts to proactively detect issues.
  • Design and operate ETL/data orchestration pipelines using SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Kafka, and/or Airflow.
  • Automate routine DBA duties such as backups, patching, health checks, and index/statistics maintenance using scripting or orchestration tools.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues: deadlocks, hung sessions, performance bottlenecks, disk I/O, memory/CPU issues; root cause and resolution.
  • Ensure robust security practices: user/role management, encryption at rest/in transit (TDE, backup encryption), auditing, and compliance with relevant standards.
  • Develop and maintain runbooks, knowledge base content, playbooks, and documentation to support operations and onboarding.
  • Serve collaboratively with DevOps, Cloud, and Engineering teams to integrate database provisioning and management into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure 24/7 availability for mission-critical systems.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience administering SQL Server in enterprise environments.
  • Solid experience with Grafana and Prometheus for metrics collection, visualization, and alerting.
  • Hands-on experience with database migrations and management in Azure and/or AWS cloud environments.
  • Extensive ETL/orchestration experience with SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Kafka, and/or Airflow.
  • Deep understanding of backup/recovery strategies, high-availability setups, replication, and performance tuning.
  • Strong scripting skills—PowerShell, Bash, T-SQL; experience integrating DBA automation in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and the ability to resolve performance and availability issues.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, with an emphasis on documentation and cross-team collaboration.

Preferred (Nice-to-Have)

  • Certifications in AWS, Azure, or Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, container orchestration, or cloud-native database offerings (e.g., Azure SQL Managed Instance, AWS RDS/Aurora).
  • Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience mentoring junior DBAs or developing internal training.
  • Proficiency in Ansible and Terraform to manage infrastructure as code.
