The Senior Network Engineer provides high-level design (IPv4 and IPv6), troubleshooting, and management functions for the University Network. This position contributes to the architecture, design, implementation, and reliable operation of UVM's wired and wireless network infrastructure spanning academic, research, administrative, and residential environments. Responsibilities include providing problem resolution for applications which run over the local University network and Internet. Configure, troubleshoot and maintain the Voice over IP infrastructure, E-911, wireless, firewalls, VPNs, routers, switches, DWDM and Ethernet technologies. Reliable networking is critical to the operations of UVM, and this position helps build scalable, reliable, and highly available networking services, aligned with institutional priorities. The Senior Network Engineer will help lead complex network projects, collaborate with central and distributed IT staff, and engage with stakeholders across UVM.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience): Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering or related discipline and five years’ experience in design, troubleshooting, and management of medium- or large-sized complex enterprise TCP/IP networks required. Four additional years of experience can substitute for the degree. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex network problems. Expert knowledge of routing and switching, and core networking technologies. Effective communication skills and the ability to work as part of a cross-functional team required.
Desirable Qualifications: Experience with network performance monitoring, and debugging tools, 802.1x, Radius and/or SAML/SSO authentication, wireless, network intrusion detection, IPv6, IP video, VoIP, EIGRP, BGP and network and server virtualization are highly desirable. Experience with automation and scripting technologies, and version control. Familiarity with research and education networking (e.g. Internet2, eduroam) and high-throughput research data flows (e.g. Science DMZ concepts).
Anticipated Pay Range: $110,000-$130,000
Special Conditions: A probationary period may be required, Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime), A probationary period may be required for current UVM employees, Bargaining unit position, This position is ineligible for telework due to the essential functions, Background Check required for this position
