Objective / Purpose

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides individualized support to people with intellectual disabilities in community employment settings. This role focuses on teaching and monitoring employment skills to promote maximum independence and inclusion in the workforce.

Major Responsibilities

1. Direct Service

  • Provide transportation to and from employment sites using a personal or agency vehicle.
  • Teach job functions and task steps, with the goal of increasing client independence.
  • Implement strategies to build skills and foster workplace success.
  • Collaborate with the clients supervisor to encourage independence and effective communication.
  • Promote natural workplace relationships and supports among co-workers.
  • Encourage individuals to pursue employment goals and make informed choices.
  • Serve as a positive role model for clients and the employment community.
  • Provide personal care assistance as needed and ensure safety across all settings.
  • Follow schedules created by the Program Administrator and Coordinator.
  • Advocate for clients in all settings.
  • Utilize the individuals primary mode of communication (e.g., translator, sign language interpreter, facilitated communication) and respond appropriately to developmental needs.
  • Follow all support plans in accordance with Developmental Services (DS) policy.
  • Complete all required trainings and work collaboratively as part of a dynamic team.

2. Record Keeping

  • Complete all required DS documentation accurately and on time, including billing, progress notes, monthly summaries, and sequence sheets.
  • Understand each clients goals and write clear, informative notes on progress and observations.
  • Notify the Coordinator and case manager if goals need updating or changes.

3. Networking

  • Share relevant information with staff, professionals, and families as needed.
  • Serve as an advocate and liaison for individuals, the Developmental Services Division, and UCS.
  • Participate in team meetings and treatment planning, assisting in the development of quality goals.
  • Foster positive relationships with community partners and ensure ongoing communication among team members.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Relevant experience in the human services field preferred

Licenses & Transportation

  • Valid Drivers License
  • Reliable transportation with insurance
