Environmental Factors: Duties are performed primarily within an institutional setting. Incumbents must possess considerable interpersonal human relations skills, including patience, understanding, and humor, to deal effectively with the institution's inmate population and other staff members. Emotional and mental stability is required. Significant interaction with inmates is required. There are constant risks of assault by incarcerated individuals, threats of grievance/lawsuits/litigation due to the rec fund, property issues, directive and property compliance, mental stress, emotional stress, tension, weather/outdoor related hazards are possible and likely, exposure to biohazard/Covid related illnesses, cuts/falls, exposure to cleaning and other chemicals.
Minimum Qualifications: High School degree/equivalent or higher and one (1) or more years of experience working in physical education, recreation program or comparable program/organization or correctional experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Associate's degree or higher in physical education, recreation services, or a related field.
Special Requirements: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
Certification Requirements: Non-Lethal Use of Force, Fire Safety, Suicide Prevention, Advanced Communication Techniques, CPR and First Aid, DOC PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Requirements.
