Specialized administrative hearings work for the Department of Labor (DOL) involving appeals from determinations pertaining to unemployment compensation and other programs administered by the Department. Duties include scheduling appeals, taking testimony under oath, making evidentiary rulings, and preparing findings of fact, conclusions of law, and decisions based upon statutes, regulations, departmental policy, and case law. Work is performed under the supervision of the DOL Appeals Administrator.
Incumbents must work closely with the public, maintain an atmosphere of fairness and impartiality and be able to examine and cross examine witnesses without arousing hostility. Tight deadlines and heavy workloads are prevalent. Hearings can be adversary in nature with both parties represented by legal counsel. Some travel may be necessary, for which a valid Vermont driver's license and private means of transportation is required.
