As a Field Service Engineer III, you will own the most complex technical challenges in the field—serving as the senior escalation point for system performance, reliability, and integration issues that others cannot resolve. Your work directly protects customer trust, accelerates recovery from critical events, and informs product and process improvements across Veeco's engineering organization. This role is built for an engineer who wants deep technical ownership, high autonomy, and visible impact on both customers and product direction.
Responsibilities
- Own the highest‑complexity installations, upgrades, and field escalations for Ion Beam Deposition systems, restoring full system performance where standard procedures fall short
- Diagnose and resolve multidiscipline system failures spanning vacuum, motion, electronics, controls, and software using structured root cause analysis
- Lead corrective and preventive action efforts, ensuring fixes are durable, documented, and fed back into engineering and product support teams
- Act as a trusted technical advisor to customer engineering teams, providing guidance on system optimization, stability, and best‑practice operation
- Serve as the on‑site technical escalation authority for assigned accounts, independently prioritizing issues based on customer and business impact
- Influence serviceability, reliability, and installation cycle time by collaborating with Engineering, Operations, and Product Support
- Produce clear, detailed service documentation that enables organizational learning and reduces repeat escalations
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline
- 8+ years of hands‑on field service or equipment support experience in semiconductor capital equipment
- Advanced experience supporting complex vacuum‑based systems in cleanroom environments
- Demonstrated ability to independently resolve escalated, non‑routine system failures
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and safely operate standard hand tools and equipment
- Ability to stand, sit, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods in customer fab and cleanroom environments
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Deep hands‑on expertise with vacuum technologies, including turbomolecular pumps, dry mechanical pumps, cryogenic pumps, helium leak detection, residual gas analyzers, and vacuum instrumentation
- Skilled at integrating and troubleshooting complex systems that span mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, robotic, and software domains
- Experienced in leading structured root cause analysis and translating findings into long‑term corrective actions
- Able to explain complex technical issues clearly to both customer engineers and internal non‑specialists
- Recognized for sound judgment under pressure and the ability to prioritize effectively during high‑impact field events
- High standards for documentation quality, accuracy, and knowledge sharing
