Structural Engineer I
Vanderlande's Distribution Engineering Department is responsible for the design, specification, and commissioning of Material Handling Systems, Warehouse Automation and Parcel Sortation Systems for our customers throughout North America. In this position, you will be working with an engineering project team in the development of an automated warehouse or parcel sortation system. You will be responsible for ensuring the design meets the customer requirements, is coordinated with other trades to minimize conflicts during installation, can be installed with efficiency, and maintain excellent communication with the site team.
Success in this role involves the ability to balance the technical requirements of the role while also having the soft skills to collaborate with the engineering team. It also involves working closely with stakeholders from other disciplines and other departments to balance priorities, improve processes and satisfy a complex set of goals. Success will require strong technical skills, creativity, strong interpersonal skills, drive, and passion. A successful candidate will demonstrate a keen intuition for when to attempt to solve problems on their own and when to enlist the help of other experienced leaders.
This role technically supports all assigned steel constructions, such as Platforms, Header steel, Grating, Handrail, and Stairs. You are the intermediate between the project teams and external engineers/suppliers regarding steel Construction and reports to the Team Lead(s) Engineering.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Preparing structural steel design models using Revit
- Designing header steel for supporting Material Handling Equipment
- Preparing design calculations using RISA software and performing hand calculations for products and connections
- Preparing and coordinating structural approval drawings
- Verifying accuracy and completeness of all technical documentation required for the project
- Assisting with preparation of construction/installation drawings
- Presenting analysis/design results to Senior Engineer and Project Engineering team
- Ensuring that design complies with building codes and standards
- Independently managing engineering design aspects of a project with minimal assistance or guidance
- Reviewing contract documents to be familiar with project requirements
- Attending project meetings; may lead coordination/BIM meetings
- Writing and reviewing requests for information (RFI)
- Resolving engineering design issues independently
- Assisting others with resolving engineering design issues
- Leading and coordinating between Vanderlande project teams and different suppliers worldwide
- Preparing steel volume calculations and specifications, in conjunction with the Project Buyer Steel
- Providing Rough Order Magnitudes (ROMs) for steel quantity and budget in particular cases
- Focusing on process improvements (multi-disciplinary) and design optimization for all steel constructions
- Responsible for the steel construction of "large" or complex projects (technical scope, engineering planning, cost, and budget control)
- System and concept thinker that can translate details/specifications into a detailed system design
- Reviewing project layouts, load and beam calculations, egress routes, stairs, step-overs from Engineer of Record for the project team and building architect
Requirements include:
- Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering with Structural Emphasis (Master's degree preferred)
- Minimum 5 to 8 years of experience in designing structures
- Willing and able to travel 10%
- Strong understanding of engineering mechanics and design fundamentals
- Intermediate skills in RISA Structural Analysis software preferred
- Knowledge of steelwork manufacturing, installation process and quality
- Knowledge of costs related to design and execution of the steel structures
- Proficient in CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks)
- Proficient in structural design software (RISA, Staad.Pro, etc.)
- Basic understanding of Material Handling Systems on a system level
- Knowledge of scope management and project planning
- Able to perform health and safety risk analysis on component and system level
- Ability to work in an entrepreneurial organization where cooperating with others and being a team member is natural
- Strong communicator, able to effectively understand and set expectations for deliverables
- Able to handle time sensitive situations and quickly set the right priorities, while maintaining a firm grasp of the details

Skills/Qualifications include:
- Up to date knowledge/experience with: 1910/29 Occupational Safety and Health Standards, Building Code (IBC), ACI 318, AISC Steel Construction Manual, ASCE 7
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
- PE License (Role won't involve stamping responsibilities)
Schedule: Ability to align schedule based on project needs - Monday to Friday, 8-5pm EST United States (preferred)
