Technical Staff Assistant IV

The Technical Staff Assistant will provide operational support for the day-to-day building operational needs and associated common areas, including research and academic initiatives for the Gary L. Thomas Energy Engineering Building (GLT) or the Engineering Discovery Building (EDB).

Responsibilities

  • Oversees building maintenance, repair, safety, and cleanliness for the GLT and EDB including all common areas. Oversees infrastructure needs and troubleshoots building problems, ensures preventative building maintenance is managed, and prepares and submits work orders for repairs and renovations. Plans and estimates time and materials requirements for project work.
  • Coordinates all lab renovations for GLT and EDB in concert with Cockrell School personnel and faculty members, including renovations, equipment outfitting activities. Interfaces with Facilities Services, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), contractors, vendors, etc. Coordinates all work orders with Facilities Services shops (Plumbing, Locks and Keys, Electric, PMCS, Furniture, Events, Moving, etc.).
  • Performs regular walk-through inspections of the GLT and EDB building and site as the Cockrell School's representative and brings construction deficiencies to the director's attention; Gains a working knowledge of GLT and EDB building's automated systems, HVAC, gas distribution and gas monitoring system, monitor their installation and witness building commissioning/testing as the Cockrell School's representative; Meets with future and present occupants and procures the necessary fit-up and move-in components, ensuring these items are ready when they move into the laboratories and at all times; and work with Cockrell School leadership to develop a move-in schedule and upkeep of GLT and EDB.
  • Manages chemical and gas distribution, inventory controls, and gas monitoring systems for the GLT and EDB.
  • Manages receiving area of GLT and EDB, to include shipping, receiving, and distribution of critical lab and departmental packages. Performs the maintenance of records, preparation of material orders, receipt, inspection and storing of electronic and mechanical components, supplies, test equipment, and the disbursement of supplies to the teaching labs and department constituents. Maintains a high degree of safety, cleanliness and security of all materials held within, according to protocols.
  • Supervise technical staff and/or student workers.
  • Processes, manages, and tracks Facilities Services work orders for GLT and EDB. Serves as point of contact for all renovations, including being responsible for lab clean out, lab make ready and space inventory.
  • Serves as a liaison with UT Environmental Health and Safety, Custodial Services, UTPD, and Emergency Management. Develops and maintains building-specific emergency preparedness protocols and train staff accordingly. Serves on the CSE safety committee and helps ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Responsible for space and furniture inventory and maintenance of space records for GLT and EDB. Coordinates building access via (Building Access Card System) and serves as a point of contact for access issues.

Required Qualifications

  • High diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Four years of experience in building operations and infrastructure, including electrical and mechanical systems, knowledge of construction standards, and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound business decisions effectively and in a timely manner, while focusing on strategic objectives within the organization objectives.
  • Demonstrated excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, maintain composure, and establish strong professional working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and outside vendors and contractors.
  • Completion of UT Austin's Environmental Health and Safety training on lab operations and safety training or ability to do so within two months from the date of hire.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • More than five years' experience working with gas cylinders, chemicals, electrical components, plumbing, and plumbing systems.
  • Experience with Honeywell gas detection, Siemens controls, Phillips lighting, Aircuity systems, and compressed gas distribution.
  • Working knowledge of or familiarity with inventory procedures and business systems.
  • Working knowledge of University systems WORQS, FMRS, Define, and BACS.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$58,000 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift
