School Support Assistant

The job of the School Support Assistant is to perform a variety of specialized duties to assist school operations in the daily supervision of students, performing a variety of school level and classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process. This position also assists other personnel as needed to ensure an efficient and effective work environment, including performing substitute teaching duties under emergency situations.

Minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Hold or obtain CPR/First Aid certification within six months of hire
  • Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios
  • Knowledgeable of age-appropriate activities; stages of child development; classroom management techniques; developing effective lesson plans; and planning and managing time effectively
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment (e.g., phone, copier, scanner, fax machines, etc.)

Essential functions and responsibilities include:

  1. Adapting classroom work under the direction of the teacher and paraeducator to provide a method to support and reinforce lesson plans
  2. Administering tests and evaluations, under supervision of teacher, monitoring student progress
  3. Implementing students’ learning and behavior plans to meet students’ social and behavioral interventions, health care plans, and ensure compliance with IEPs
  4. Conferring with teachers assisting in evaluating student progress and implementing student objectives
  5. Leading small groups; learning through play; communicating orally and in writing; and adhering to safety practices
  6. Monitoring individual and groups of students in a variety of settings to provide a safe and positive learning environment
  7. Working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and advising others; operating within a defined budget
  8. Preparing teaching materials and related reports to implement lesson plans and document student progress
  9. Reporting incidents to maintain the personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment, and adhere to Education Code, administrative and school policies
  10. Performing record keeping and clerical functions to support the teacher and administrator
  11. Assisting other personnel as required and needed to ensure an efficient and effective work environment
  12. Utilizing resources from other work units to meet goals and objectives
  13. Working with frequent interruptions; adapting to changing work priorities; being attentive to detail; reading a variety of manuals, writing documents following prescribed formats, and presenting information to others
  14. Communicating effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  15. Supporting a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to perform the duties of the position effectively
  16. Participating in various meetings to receive and convey information
  17. Maintaining regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements effectively and efficiently
  18. Performing other duties as assigned, including supervising students in a classroom setting to implement emergency substitute lesson plans

Employee supervisory responsibilities: No

Work environment and physical demands include some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
