Design Engineering Technician

We're looking for a versatile Design Engineering Technician to join our Research and Development team. This role combines mechanical design and drafting skills with hands-on prototyping and testing work. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable working in CAD and on the production floor-someone who enjoys designing, building, testing, and iterating mechanical systems. You'll collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to develop and validate next-generation X-ray tube technologies used in medical imaging systems.

Job Description Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Drafting
  • Create 3D CAD models and detailed drawings for prototypes, assemblies, and test fixtures.
  • Support concept development, tolerance analysis, and design-for-manufacturability efforts.
  • Maintain design documentation, BOMs, and revision control throughout development cycles.
  • Prototyping and Fabrication
  • Assemble and modify prototypes, test rigs, and mechanical components.
  • Collaborate with machinists, fabricators, and suppliers to produce custom parts.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical builds and propose practical design improvements.
  • Testing and Data Collection
  • Set up, instrument, and execute engineering tests under supervision or independently.
  • Record, analyze, and summarize test data for engineering evaluation.
  • Maintain lab and test equipment in good working order and ensure safe operating practices.
  • Support root cause investigations and help develop corrective design actions based on test outcomes.
  • Cross-Functional Support
  • Assist engineers in RandD experiments, product development, and validation testing.
  • Support the transition from prototype to production by refining designs for manufacturability.
  • Provide feedback on mechanical performance, assembly ergonomics, and test repeatability.

Qualifications

  • Education: A.S. degree or technical certification in Mechanical Design, Drafting, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • Experience: 3+ years in an RandD, prototype, or product development environment-preferably in medical devices, vacuum systems, or high-voltage equipment.
  • Proven experience in CAD modeling (SolidWorks, Creo, or similar).
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with hands-on assembly, troubleshooting, and instrumentation skills.

Skills

  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, or similar).
  • High mechanical aptitude and strong hands-on problem-solving ability.
  • Experience with mechanical assembly, fabrication, and use of hand/power tools.
  • Understanding of materials, GDandT, castings, CNC machining, tool and die practices, and mechanical design principles.
  • Familiarity with test instrumentation, data acquisition, or basic experimental methods preferred.

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • Medium work that will frequently require employee to lift/move up to 60 lbs.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving heavy equipment and/or supplies frequently.
  • Reaching above and below the shoulder frequently.
  • Above-average agility and dexterity with the ability to hold, grasp and manipulate small parts and use hand and power tools frequently.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and handle physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stretching, reaching, repetitive motion, or similar.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, or on the basis of disability.
