Veteran Services Driver

Under the direction of the Knox County Veterans Service Office, the Veteran Services Driver transports Knox County Veterans to and from Veterans Administration medical centers, maintains transportation schedules and assists the Office Coordinator. The driver is responsible for the safety of all passengers while in the vehicles and must maintain/perform routine maintenance on vehicles and maintain a mileage log. The Veteran Services Driver will perform other duties as requested by the Director or Assistant Director. Full-time drivers may be asked to fill in for the Office Coordinator in their absence by maintaining transportation schedules.

Essential Functions

Operate vehicles:

Retrieve work orders and route for day from transportation coordinator.

Follow specific pick-up and drop-off routes on daily basis.

Visually ensure passengers are seated and ready to travel.

Operate vehicles as assigned to pick up and drop off passengers.

Safely operate vehicles carrying passengers in mixed traffic and in severe weather, maintaining compliance with all traffic laws and applicable DOT, Federal, State, local system regulations and policies.

Perform pre-trip inspections:

Check tire pressure to ensure tires are full and safe for travel.

Perform general area and truck cleaning tasks.

Perform preventative maintenance, including the following: Check fluid levels and hoses, Check all lights, signals, etc.

Manually check standard brake systems.

Vehicle issues and needs for repairs are reported to transportation coordinator.

Transportation coordinator will be advised of any scheduling changes or pertinent information regarding trips.

Maintain driver manifest records including rides, cancellations, no-shows, and same day add-ons.

Keep accurate records, including milage logs and all passenger manifests.

Pump gas and keep records of fuel receipts.

Mobility device loading (Mobility Device can be a wheelchair, scooter, walker, or any device that assists the movement of an individual):

  • Loading mobility devices into vehicle storage areas as to assist passengers.
  • Perform Passenger Assistance tasks:
  • Assist passengers in an emergency as necessary.
  • Perform post-trip inspection:
  • Maintain appearance of the vehicle to ensure cleanliness.
  • Sweep debris, clean up any spills, and remove any trash or items left by passengers.
  • Sanitize the interior regularly to ensure optimal cleanliness.
  • Conduct visual inventories of vehicle equipment, supplies, and restock items as needed.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, including the following: Check fluid levels and hoses, Check all lights, signals, etc.
  • Manually check standard brake systems; and
  • Vehicle issues and needs for repairs will be reported to Transportation Coordinator.

Job Standards

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Must possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Must meet and maintain all required licenses and certifications as a continued condition of employment.
