University Counselor I, Ilitch Career Services

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced University Counselor I, Ilitch Career Services at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

  • The Ilitch School Career Services University Counselor I provides comprehensive career development support to Wayne State University business students and alumni through individual and group career counseling, career readiness programming, and guidance on academic majors, career pathways, internships, and employment opportunities. The Counselor I collaborates with Career Services staff, employers, and faculty to support student success, retention, and post-graduation outcomes.
  • Provide individual career counseling to students and alumni on topics including career exploration, major selection, job and internship search strategies, résumé and cover letter development, interviewing skills, and graduate/professional school preparation.
  • Design and deliver workshops, presentations, and classroom visits focused on career readiness, professional development, and employment preparation.
  • Assist students with utilizing career management platforms (e.g., Handshake), career assessments, and labor market resources.
  • Support employer engagement initiatives, including career fairs, on-campus recruiting, employer information sessions, and networking events.
  • Collaborate with academic departments, student support services, and campus partners to integrate career development into the student experience.
  • Maintain accurate advising records, appointment notes, and outcome data in accordance with departmental and university standards.
  • Support special programs and initiatives related to internships, experiential learning, equity and access, and student career outcomes.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and ongoing professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Psychology, Social Work, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience providing career counseling, academic advising, student support services, or related work with college students or young adults.
  • Knowledge of career development theory and best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in university career services or higher education.
  • Familiarity with career management systems and career development assessments.
  • Experience delivering workshops or presentations to groups.
  • Knowledge of employer recruiting practices, internships, and experiential learning models.
