Performs skilled equipment operator and truck driving tasks.
Collects all waste receptacles on a specific route.
Ensures that the loading and packing mechanisms of the refuse body work correctly and that the operation of dumping containers is done safely and without damage to equipment and property.
Observes all state and federal highway laws for safe operation of vehicle.
Inspects vehicle before, during and after operation and reports any issues to the supervisor; pushes containers to a position from which they can be dumped and returns to their proper place.
Cleans up spilled refuse around the container and dumping locations.
Washes, cleans, picks up all designated containers on Central Avenue, and other stops as may be required.
Changes bags each time trash is emptied from decorative containers.
Runs recycling collection route of City offices and local schools on a regular schedule.
Performs operator maintenance on the vehicle (including washing, cleaning, check tire pressure, etc.).
Performs special assignments on a case-by-case basis.
Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.
Works under general supervision of an administrative superior.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; and one (1) year operating comparable class trucks preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (Class B) and a clean driving record.
Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the equipment and an appreciation of such hazards and precautions relating to the solid waste industry.
Ability to drive refuse collection vehicles and to operate the loading mechanism without close supervision.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and to complete forms and make simple reports accurately.
Ability to perform strenuous labor tasks under all types of weather conditions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Frequently stands, walks, talks, and hears; occasionally sits; uses hands to handle objects; reaches with hands and arms; stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, or balances; may use sense of taste or smell; specific vision requirements include close, color, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; occasionally required to lift up to 70 pounds.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud; exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals; works in high, precarious places, and near moving mechanical parts; at risk of electrical shock and/or vibration.
