Supervisory Medical Support Assistant

The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center - State College, PA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) is recruiting for a Supervisory Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position. The MSA Supervisory at this level plan and direct MSA programs at medical center and will function in Health Administration service.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and reviewing protocols related to scheduling and clinic operations.
  • Assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff.
  • Resolving complex problems to ensure patient services are met.
  • Evaluating new products, equipment, and systems to make recommendations for improved operations.
  • Identifying educational or training needs.
  • Making final decisions on selections; evaluating performance, and taking disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Planning and directing the subordinate lead, supervisor, and MSA's activities with full administrative and professional responsibility.
  • Extracting and analyzing data to provide reports to senior management in support of tracking measures.
  • Handling escalated calls and delivering direct customer service to resolve complex or non-standard issues.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Requirements Conditions of Employment

You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Subject to background/security investigation. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements.

Qualifications Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education: High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education.

English Language Proficiency: MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3.j.

Grade Determinations: Supervisory Medical Support Assistant, GS-8 Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level leading or supervising MSAs or equivalent administrative patient support staff in a non-VA medical inpatient, outpatient, or interdisciplinary setting.

Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
