Senior Map Flightline Engineer

Airbus Commercial Aircraft is looking for a Senior MAP Flightline Engineer to join our Engineering department based in Mobile, AL. In this position you will have a unique opportunity to be as close as possible to the physical Aircraft and deeply involved through the complete Aircraft design, build, test process and Aircraft operations. The MAP III Flightline position is responsible to develop solutions related to aircraft non-conformities which require engineering expertise and delegation to be resolved during aircraft flight line and delivery activities.

Your working environment: Nearby on 'Airbus Way' you will find the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility for commercial aircraft. Opened at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley in 2015, the facility produces A320 Family aircraft and added a second product line for the A220 in 2019. The facility, which strengthens the U.S. aerospace industry, is part of Airbus' strategy to enhance its global competitiveness by meeting the growing needs of its customers in the United States and beyond.

Your challenges:

  • Accountable for design engineering activities in the aircraft systems (Aircraft Control & Monitoring, Avionics, power & Mechanical systems, Powerplant).
  • Creation and authorization of technical solutions including justification reports for repairs, reworks or design updates. Standard repairs are approved autonomously, major repairs if required with the support of the transnational Airbus Engineering departments (design, stress, fatigue, aerodynamics, material etc.)
  • Define technical solutions during NC treatment for metallic and composite structures comprising the complete primary / secondary aircraft structure (all Airframe ATA chapters linked to structure design).
  • Accountability for the given approved repair, rework, and troubleshooting instruction as well as for design update solutions in front of the corresponding design/stress office and authorities (TC/FAA).
  • Represent and act in the name of the Chief Engineering and the design offices of AIRBUS (by delegation) as well as design to build suppliers.
  • Act as an interface between the A220 Family Chief Engineer/ Design office and the Manufacturing/ Quality assurance (Operations).
  • Provide engineering support to the FAL US during the complete manufacturing process from the delivery of the sections, FAL and flightline activities, up to the aircraft ferry flight in all structure related items including engineering presentations in front of the customers (internal and external).
  • Create, approve, and authorize temporary aircraft definitions (special instructions) in line with design and airworthiness requirements for testing purposes.
  • Create, approve and monitor design corrective actions / improvements and preventive measures (launch of new modifications, drawing updates, design query notes) driving product improvements or non-conformity eradication.
  • Present technical explanations/corrective actions to the flight test department and to the customer if required (internal and external customers).
  • Perform other duties as assigned and adapted to the FAL requirements.
  • Assigns, coordinates and reviews the technical work of the mentee
  • Non-conformities (NC's) are written by the production/quality departments or Flight Test Engineers, if they detect any deviations/damages during the assembly process, inspection or production flights.
  • Concessions cover significant non-conformities requiring dedicated justification and corresponding engineering technical delegation

Your boarding pass:

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical or aircraft construction engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 9+ years relevant experience in an Engineering, M.E or engineering coordination role.
  • Structure design (composite/carbon fiber and metallic)
  • Experience in design office (design or stress) of aircraft structures (Airframe)
  • Knowledge in fatigue and damage tolerance justification
  • Knowledge of stress calculations / justifications
  • Knowledge of aeronautical used materials and corresponding corrosion protection
  • Knowledge of repair design and stress principles
  • Knowledge of Aircraft configuration management rules
  • Knowledge of AIRBUS internal procedures, processes and tools
  • Experience with AIRBUS manuals (Structure Repair Manual, Aircraft Maintenance Manual, Illustrated Parts Catalog etc.)
  • Demonstrated success in identifying and solving problems
  • Willing to travel up to 15% of the time overseas and domestically within the Airbus international network, supplier and customer sites
  • Eligible for employment in the U.S.

  • Vision: able to see and read computer screens and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings.
  • Hearing: able to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds on the production floor including safety warnings or alarms.
  • Speaking: able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications.
  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment and some tools including production tools such as hydraulic lifts.
  • Carrying: able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.
  • Lifting: able to lift documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.
  • Pushing / Pulling: able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools.
  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on the computer.
  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving.
  • Standing: able to stand for discussions in offices or on the production floor.
  • Travel: able to travel independently and at short notice.
  • Walking (include routine walking such as to a shared printer to retrieve documents): able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces.
