Mechanical Handling Engineer

Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.

You will be working as a member of the Mechanical Handling Engineering group designing and supporting complex mechanical equipment. You will be responsible for design, development, modification, evaluation, and/or issues resolution of mechanical components and processes. The primary role is to collect the mechanical, control, safety, nuclear and other requirements for the equipment in order to develop highly detailed design documents, drawings, and calculations for the equipment to meet the applicable requirements. The primary products of the Mechanical Handling Engineering Group are Specifications, Material Requisitions, Mechanical Handling diagrams, Mechanical Flow diagrams, drawings, equipment evaluations and equipment data sheets used to validate the suitability of the equipment for use on project.

This position is a full-time role that offers part-time telework flexibility in the Richland, Washington project office. Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full time presence in the Richland, Washington project office, then may offer part-time telework flexibility. This position works a 9/80 schedule, offering every other Friday off.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard mechanical engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications
  • Participates in the design, development, modification and evaluation of mechanical components and processes used utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs)
  • Coordinates work and collaborates with other engineering disciplines
  • Provides technical assistance to other mechanical personnel and will interact with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues and industry codes and standards
  • Prepares standard discipline deliverables and prepares standard engineering budgets and schedules within discipline
  • Lead engineering efforts on assignments while providing instruction and mentoring junior engineers
  • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements
  • Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Level 1: Requires a University Hire with less than 1 year of experience or 4-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Level 2: Requires a University Hire with 1-2 years of experience or 5-6 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge.)
  • Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns-including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize Microsoft office suite of products.
  • Familiar with the process of resolving complex engineering issues and development of innovative solutions.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks and capable of generating engineering quality models and drawings.
  • Perform in a highly collaborative environment where all team members participate in resolving design challenges.
  • Have working knowledge of Unity 3D Game Engine
