Food Service Worker

The Food Service Worker position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI. The Food Service Worker is responsible for setting procedures in accomplishing repetitive assignments and following an established sequence of work such as working in the dish room, passing trays, portioning cold foods and dipping hot foods and a variety of duties primarily concerned with food service.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform food preparation, dishwashing, dry and refrigerated storage tasks with several steps and attention to work operations. Works in various areas of the kitchen such as food preparation, dish and pot washing, dry and refrigerated storage and receiving and serving line. Sets up glasses, silverware, dishes, trays, napkins and condiments.

Major duties include:

• Setting up and breaking down assigned station with the correct supplies and food items
• Portioning food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and specified dishware
• Selecting and placing correct items on patient trays
• Deciding what food items to serve for the most common diets
• Identifying obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designated by the menu
• Setting up dining room tables for service, placing food and beverages on tables, and replenishing items as necessary
• Delivering meal trays to the patients' bedsides, reporting the patients' comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian
• Providing assistance to cooks in the food preparation area, such as weigh, measure and assemble ingredients according to standardized recipes
• Preparing fresh fruit/cold salads/dressings/sandwich fillings and cold sandwiches and simple cold desserts
• Reading and interpreting regular or modified menus, individual diet cards, tray tickets or patient selections
• Performing heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas
• Performing other duties as assigned

Work Schedule: Employees will retain their same schedule they are currently working when promoted to WG3.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/14/2025. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. Performs work requiring light to moderate physical. May be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. Subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 40 pounds with the assistance of others.
