Food Service Worker

Wage Grade 4 Food Service Workers independently perform duties that require proficiency in special procedures. They require a broad knowledge of service operations, such as food and beverage preparation, modified diets, computer proficiency, dishwashing, dry and refrigerated storage, and safety and sanitation. Wage grade 4 workers can do all the duties of a lower grade worker, but also may help with making patient selections, thickening items and checking trays.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews diet trays/plates before delivery to patients ensuring correct food temperature and compliance with tray ticket or diet card.
  • Assembles food items and condiments for hot and cold loading of trays or serving of food on plates in long term care dining rooms.
  • Ensures trays/plates appear appetizing, are sanitary and contents are complete.
  • Manages all functions pertaining to diet office communications center when assigned to that area.
  • Uses a computer to run diet activity list and tray tickets and prepares tray tickets and patient select menus for the tray line.
  • Runs nourishment labels, checks diet changes for early and late trays, prepares slips for out patients, runs back-up copies for tray tickets and nourishments, removes NPO's and assists in food preparation as needed.
  • Assembles, labels, and arranges completed recipe items in preparation for use by cooks.

Work Schedule: 6:30am - 10:30am. Every third weekend off.

Physical Requirements:

Wage Grade 4 Food Service Workers perform work requiring light to moderate physical effort. They may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing and delivering supplies. They are subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 40 pounds with the assistance of others.

Requirements:

U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation. Selective Services Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements. Complete all application requirements detailed in the "Required Documents" section of this announcement. Complete pre-employment physical/evaluation. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
