Environmental Services Technician Leader - Housekeeping Aid Leader

This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The position, generally aligned under the Housekeeping Supervisor, is responsible for supporting and performing tasks (e.g., environment of care, textile distribution and training) associated with the Environmental Management Services (EMS) goals and objectives. The position has no formal disciplinary authority over staff in the execution of daily tasks.

Responsibilities duties include:

  • Possesses the knowledge of and ability to apply principles of chemistry, biology, bacteriology, etc. as they apply to hospital housekeeping requirements.
  • Comprehend, interpret and implement verbal and written instructions from Supervisor to ensure acceptable results of assigned area.
  • Abiding by and adhering to medical center policies.
  • Operating and performing minor maintenance to floor scrubber/buffers, wet pickup vacuums, dry vacuums, and battery powered scrubbers.
  • Performing duties such as scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors; sweeping, mopping, vacuuming and shampooing of rugs and carpets.
  • Using aseptic cleaning/disinfection techniques.
  • Handling exposure to both non-infections and infectious waste safely.
  • Using standard precautions along with proper personal protection equipment.
  • Assisting the management to accomplish a vast array of service tasks and has the authority to accomplish day to day operational requirements.
  • Providing instruction on proper use of all equipment - floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, etc.
  • Operating battery powered equipment, moving furniture and setting up ladders or other heavy equipment as required.
  • Using ladders and scaffolds to wash ceiling fixtures and room partitions.

Work Schedule: Training will be 7:00 am - 3:30 pm for two weeks, then shift assignments will be determined according to the needs of the service.

Shift Assignments: First Shift: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Second Shift: 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm, Third Shift: 11:00 pm - 7:30 am; subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Position Description Title/PD#: Environmental Services Technician Leader - Housekeeping Aid Leader/PD99913S

Physical Requirements: This position requires occasional bending/stooping, crouching, and kneeling. Lifting up to 50 pounds. Approximately 40 percent of time spent standing, 40 percent of time spent walking and 20 percent of the time spent sitting. Hearing and visual acuity. Manual dexterity to use a phone and operating equipment.

Working Conditions: The work is accomplished in a variety of different areas including operating rooms, treatment rooms, examination rooms, imaging rooms, wards and other public, recreational and administrative areas. Protective clothing and personnel protective equipment (PPE) including gowns, gloves, safety shoes, masks, etc. is required in the accomplishment of some aspects of the work. There is the potential for exposure to strong cleaning solutions, bodily fluids and communicable disease. The work can involve occupied patient rooms and interaction with both medical and psychiatric patients. May be required to work inside and outside. May require some exposure to hazardous cleaning chemicals.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
