Description of Job

This work unit develops plans, specifications and estimates for maintenance, reconstruction and rehabilitation projects for the transportation system within CDOT Region 1. Also performs field engineering and monitors, oversee and supervise all aspects of construction contracts along with quality assurance programs within Region 1.

About the Position

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is filling an Engineering Construction Inspector in our South Program office. This position will support project engineers by reviewing various field materials tests and inspecting and documenting contractor work to ensure projects are constructed safely and in compliance with project plans and specifications. This position will produce and review documentation and quantities for monthly progress payments and assist in plan review.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Certify that materials incorporated during construction are in conformance with the contract by supervising and reviewing field and laboratory tests; review quantity and quality of the contractor's materials.
  • Certify that contractor's work is in conformance with construction plans and specifications; inspect contractor's work procedures by being on site and being familiar with plans and specifications.
  • Check inspection reports for description of contractor's work, calculations, and accuracy.
  • Request/analyze field modifications, which often impact budgets, when plans & field conditions differ.
  • Oversee traffic control on construction projects to ensure compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and traffic control plans; review submitted traffic control plans; request modification to traffic control operations and plans as necessary.
  • Ensure accurate payment for contract construction work by verifying pay quantities, project activities, conditions, and resolutions to problems and situations.
  • Study CDOT manuals, attend assigned training classes and participate in seminars to enhance knowledge necessary to perform job duties.
  • Complete all project records and documentation.
  • Attend project meetings.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
  • Approximately 80% spent in the field, 20% spent in the office/field office
  • Eligible for overtime and potential for shift differential
  • Required to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Travel required during work hours within the Denver Metro area
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
  • Required to work outside in all weather conditions, in close proximity to moving traffic, and over variable terrain
  • Night, holiday, and weekend work may be required depending on project schedules
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • May be required to work on road closures during emergency situations
  • Typically reporting to a field office in Douglas or Arapahoe Counties. Reporting to 18500 Colfax in Aurora about 2 times a month or when there is no work in the field.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience Only:

A high school diploma or GED AND at least four (4) years of experience with a primary focus in any combination of the following:

Assisting in the design of construction plans, monitoring construction projects, conducting materials testing, inspecting projects, and completing documentation for transportation related projects.

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or GED AND a combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least four (4) years that includes:

Education from an accredited college or university with coursework in civil engineering, construction management, engineering, geology, mathematics, trade school related to construction or automotive technology (example: Electrician, Plumber, Car Mechanic) or another field of study related to the duties of this position will be considered.

Experience with a primary focus in assisting in the design of construction plans, monitoring construction projects, conducting materials testing, inspecting projects, and completing documentation for transportation related projects will be considered.

A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

Required to obtain certifications in LabCAT Levels A, B, & I, WAQTC Excavation, Soils, and Embankment, and ACI Field Testing Technician I within 12 months of hire.
