Customer Service Clerk

Working the front desk, our customer service clerks serve as the "face" of the library. We strive to present a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone, so the successful candidate will be kind and courteous as they help patrons of all ages check out materials, answer directional questions, register new users and answer the phone. Patience, excellent listening skills, and the ability to problem solve are all essential as you'll be helping patrons resolve problems with lost or damaged materials in the best possible manner for users and the library. We handle personal information so understanding the importance of confidentiality is essential. Clerks are also responsible for re-shelving library materials, so you'll have to be able to push loaded book carts (no more than 50 lbs), alphabetize materials, and sort things into Dewey Decimal order (we can help you brush up on this). This is detail oriented work so we want someone who prides themselves on accuracy. It's also physically challenging work, as it requires you to bend, squat, kneel or crawl as you put things away on the bottom shelves. You'll be up and moving for most of your shifts so dig out those running shoes (which go well with our laidback dress code). You'll also be dealing with technology: computers, printers, self-checks and photocopiers. We will be happy to train you on our systems, but a basic understanding and familiarity with computers, email and things that go "beep" is a definite plus. To be qualified for this job, you'll need: a high school diploma or the equivalent, previous customer service experience, good communication skills and an understanding of what it means to be a good team player. There will be tests! (But not hard ones.) The library will evaluate your formal application, rating of education and experience, and then call possible candidates for an oral interview. We conduct reference checks and job-related skills tests. The Lester Public Library team is a friendly and outgoing group and we think this is one of the best possible places to work. You won't get to read all day, but if you like books, people and a low-stress work environment, this might just be the place for you. Hours are flexible, with daytime, evening and Saturday shifts. Pro-rated holidays and vacation are included. Legal stuff: The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. The job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and employee and is subject to change as the needs of the employer and the requirements of the job change.
