Construction Engineer

Under general supervision, performs on-site construction engineering work requiring the application of standard techniques, methods, and procedures gained through construction engineering experience. Responsible for construction and materials inspection tasks for assigned projects and may work on non-routine and increasingly complex assignments. Monitors and documents progress and helps ensure adherence to contract and subcontract terms, performance, quality requirements, and engineering specifications. Works closely with the construction team and other staff to coordinate and complete work.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in administering portions of the contract and may prepare change orders
  • Participate in arranging job progress meetings, material testing, and construction inspections
  • Accurately interpret contract drawings, standard drawings, and specifications
  • Measure, document, and calculate quantities of project work performed
  • Coordinate the interface between design and field construction and inspection work
  • Conduct work with minimal supervision, exercising good engineering judgment and initiative
  • Identify, report, and document construction activities to ensure compliance with contract documents
  • Resolve field coordination issues and bring larger concerns to the attention of the resident engineer, contractor, or other individual in charge of the site
  • Identify deviations from plans and specifications and offer ideas for resolving
  • Produce accurate technical reports to document daily construction inspection activities
  • Review and monitor work for Quality Assurance/Quality Control purposes and course correct when applicable
  • Monitor street and utility projects for compliance with traffic, survey, or construction activities
  • Be present on-site when required by contractor(s) and/or project manager
  • Observe and demonstrate all construction safety protocols; communicate concerns with the resident engineer, contractor, or supervisor
  • Develop and maintain collaborative and trusted relationships with multidisciplinary teams
  • Mentor and delegate work to less experienced members of the construction team
  • Perform other duties as required

Education/Experience

B.S. in civil engineering or related field (ABET/EAC-accredited program)

4+ years of applicable experience

PE Required (or working towards licensure in the next 6-12 months)

IDOT Documentation Certification and OSHA 30 required, or obtained within 6 months of hire

Valid driver’s license required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrates ability to successfully engage with professionals in a multi-disciplinary environment, communicate with team members; build relationships and trust

Exercises sound engineering judgement

Skilled in preparing reports, cost estimates, schedules, and quantity take offs

Effectively applies experience and skills to increasingly complex assignments

Demonstrates ability to convey information through effective verbal and written communication

Proficient with computer-aided design software and other software packages typically associated with construction and engineering required

Proficient with general documentation software such as Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), Bluebeam, and/or PowerPoint

Demonstrates understanding of industry and construction practices, methodologies, and best practices

Ability to present recommendations and results to stakeholders as requested

Proficient presentation skills and developing leadership skills

Effectively maintains office and field health & safety requirements and protocols

Maintains a work schedule conducive to team collaboration and project-specific requirements

Physical Requirements

Involves sitting some of the time, but requires the ability to conduct work on a construction site or other field location

May exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to move objects

Occasionally lifts and carries up to 30 pounds

Considerable time may be spent at a workstation using a computer and using various forms of communication (telephone, email, messaging, etc.)

Field work includes periods of driving or riding in a vehicle on construction sites and exposure to outside weather conditions and various environmental conditions

Physical activities include walking, stooping, crawling, and crouching
