Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (Imaging)

The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (Imaging) provides clinical and administrative support to staff, patients, and administrators relating to the facility wide lifecycle management of medical equipment. Biomedical support requires the application of engineering and mechanical concepts and methodology to provide lifecycle management and technical support of equipment utilized in the practice of medicine, and to improve care provided by clinical staff throughout VA.

Responsibilities The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) will use his/her extensive practical knowledge and expertise in engineering, information technology physiology, anatomy, the principles and techniques of operation of medical equipment, and research or clinical procedures, to:

Advise clinicians and management regarding the need for and appropriateness of acquiring and/or replacing medical equipment and systems; Assist in developing requirements and evaluating technologies and specific equipment and systems for possible purchase; Plan for installation, including development of design criteria for construction and site preparation when necessary.

Duties include:

  • Lifecycle management of advanced imaging or radiological devices to include physical and network support.
  • Completes both routine and complex assignments involved in the installation, maintenance, modification, troubleshooting, repair and calibration of these complex therapeutic and diagnostic devices and systems.
  • Utilizes comprehensive knowledge of imaging techniques, technologies, radiological practices and procedures in resolving highly complex equipment failures that have immediate risks to patient safety.
  • Troubleshoots and maintains radiology information systems and interfaces (i.e. HL7, DICOM, TCP/IP) with EHR alongside PACS Administrators, OIT, BESS (Biomedical Information Systems) and other experts.
  • Manages these systems as assigned.
  • Performs advanced testing and troubleshooting of advanced imaging or radiological devices involving their interfaces and connections to other medical devices or information systems either directly or through the facility's hardwired and wireless networks.
  • Adheres to Medical Device Isolation Architecture Guidelines in both pre-procurement and during system implementation, and system management.
  • Loads operating system and clinical application software as needed.
  • Executes VA guidelines when responding to network incident response (due to infection, loss of services or regional and local policy changes).
  • As assigned, employee is responsible for lifecycle management of other medical devices and systems such as life support, dialysis, and monitoring to include physical and network support.
  • Maintain functional knowledge of relevant safety codes and standards of regulatory bodies including, but not limited to, The Joint Commission, National Fire Protection Association, Food and Drug Administration, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation.
  • Document all work performed in the computerized maintenance management system. This documentation is completed in accordance with regulatory body requirements, the Office of Healthcare Technology Management Documentation of Services policies and guidelines, and other VA requirements.
  • Maintain knowledge of the state of the art in medical technology, including scientific advances, network protocols, and vendor changes. Focus on professional development in all areas of medical technology lifecycle management including technical skills. Knowledge and training is obtained from formal (conference, vendor-provided classes) or informal (magazines, articles, peer training) means.
  • Provide training and education as appropriate to medical technology end users and clinical staff.
  • Provide mentoring and technical training to peers and Biomedical Equipment Support Specialists at developmental levels.

Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Are you proficient in spoken and written English, as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d)? You must meet the basic education requirements of the position as stated below:

(1) Associates or higher degree in the biomedical technology or biomedical engineering field; OR (2) Associates or higher degree in electronics, a field of information technology, or engineering (other than biomedical engineering) AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR (3) Completion of the Department of Defense (DOD) biomedical equipment technician training program; OR (4) Completion of a DOD training program in repair and maintenance of electronic systems or information technology AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR (5) Completion of a biomedical engineering technician or Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) certificate program that included an internship or apprenticeship; OR (6) Completion of biomedical engineering technician or HTM certificate program that did not include an internship AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR (7) Hold or having ever held certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), or Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM). Continuous maintenance of certification is not required throughout VHA employment.

Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with current health care industry and required using knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) directly applicable to the assignment and associated within the scope of the BESS profession. Experience is only creditable if it was acquired in the health care industry and is either directly related to the position to be filled or a related field (for example, Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer, or Information Technology (IT) Specialist).

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 12.
