Advanced Medical Support Assistant

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) will independently perform a full range of duties related to the delivery of healthcare services and administrative support duties in a Clinic Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) or Outpatient Clinic at VA NCHCS. The Advanced MSA provides specialized and expert administrative patient support while working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model.

Responsibilities include:

  • Recommending changes to existing procedures based on current administrative guidelines.
  • Utilizing numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics involved in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model.
  • Developing and maintaining effective communication with the patient, interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model teams, VA medical centers, and other agencies.
  • Coordinating with the patient care team to review clinic appointment availability to ensure that clinic schedules are closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinics and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Processing incoming patient secure messaging and participating in team huddles and team meetings to manage, plan, problem solve, and follow-up with patient care.
  • Scheduling eye appointments including consults, urgent/walk-ins, SAR/RFS, second opinions, etc.
  • Entering Community Care consults for Optometry and Ophthalmology.
  • Calling patients to remind them of eye appointments, advise of dilation or upcoming procedures and possible need to have a driver.
  • Requesting records from non-VA Eye Clinics to facilitate eye care for Veterans.
  • Communicating with the Optical Shop to ensure Veterans can order their frames/lenses through the VA.
  • Working with Primary Care Service and other specialties to answer eye inquiries and to schedule appointments.
  • Working with Community Care and RCI Team to obtain patient and provider history for continuation of Community Care coverage or urgent authorizations.

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 08:00am - 04:30pm (PST). This is not a virtual position. This is not a remote position.

Requirements:

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements.
  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience and Education: Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR, Education. One year above high school; OR, Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
  • Certification. None required.

Graduation from an accredited or approved educational institution, which includes degrees in healthcare-related fields, is creditable toward meeting the experience requirements as stated above.

Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment.
