Medical Support Assistant

The AMSA schedules patients for exams, surgical procedures by providing administrative support for the Eye Clinic at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center in Cincinnati, OH. Responsibilities include:

  • Using independent judgment to resolve clinic scheduling difficulties including arrangements with other professional/technical support personnel on atypical or complex situations.
  • Referring complex situations to the Health Systems Specialist in a media appropriate for the circumstance.
  • Recognizing, analyzing and recommending solutions for the efficient conduct of patient care activities in the Eye Center.
  • Conducting outpatient interviews, guiding patients through the outpatient system, making referrals, providing follow-up; documenting complaints/compliments and suggesting resolution to proper officials.
  • Acting as a patient advocate, working to expedite care and resolving issues.
  • Providing advice to professional/technical staff on eligibility determinations, and medical center procedures, policies and directives.
  • Collaborating in advance with Health System Specialist to ensure provider and associated staff's scheduled leave matches cancelled appointments demonstrating flexibility and willingness to accommodate physicians and support staff in scheduling procedures within established protocols.
  • Mainly performing scheduling, administrative cross coverage, referral and consult management for the Eye Center.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:30am - 5:00pm

Requirements:

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Must be proficient in the English language.
  • Experience/Education/Combination: Experience. No experience required.
  • Education. High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education.

Grade Determinations:

  • To qualify for the GS-06 level, you must have one year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level.
  • Experience at the GS-5 includes but is not limited to: scheduling, cancelling, re-scheduling patients appointments and/or monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility, ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit, verifying and updating demographics and insurance information, processing all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals, performing basic eligibility, co-pays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage, etc.
